I have an assignment. To paint a picture of Jesus in the Gospel of luke. I was wondering if y’all could read it and see if I have all of these elements
1, A personal Introspeciver of Jesus
2. Connecting the Jesus of History with the Christ of Faith
3.Integration the word of the Gospel, author and community
4. style and format
It would REALLY help me out! thanks! I’m very worried about it
In the Gospel of Luke Jesus emerges primarily as an ethical teacher. He appears as someone confident in that teaching and is very interested in inculcating the virtues of compassion and forgiveness among his followers.
As I read Luke, Jesus appeared as a very powerful figure. He never asks anyone if they want to be healed but just heals them anyway. He seems to come on the scene as a prophet right out of the Hebrew Bible. In the synagogue he quotes the prophet Isaiah and talks about freeing those who are oppressed and letting those who are blind see.
Jesus wants salvation for everyone. He talks about how everyone will be invited to the table of God and that we should never judge anyone. This is especially true today because when I watch the news I see stories of many people forgetting to be kind to one another. Jesus says the greatest commandment is to “Love the Lord with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength and with all your mind, and love your neighbor as yourself. This is especially true because it is so hard to love others but it is truly the best way to love Jesus.
In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus comes across differently. He is reasoned and a critic of society but is very concerned about how his teachings impact society. Therefore, when Jesus dies in Luke, I feel it is much like a martyr’s death because it is calmer; he goes to the cross knowing this is what must happen. He does not cry “My God, My God, why has thou forsaken me?” but just commends his spirit into the hands of the father.
I also see Jesus as a divine man. Jesus’ powers are visible and are exercised. I see this in his teaching of the parables and in his miracles. Luke also has a long travel narrative for Jesus. I think this is so Jesus can perform more miracles and teachings.
Jesus also shows that riches are not what will get a person to heaven. When Jesus tells the Parable of the rich man and Lazarus, Jesus is showing his attitude toward the rich and the poor. There is a reversal of fates for the rich man and Lazarus. Jesus does not want us to have many riches and not care about others.
As I read Luke, I looking into my own heart and see how I could improve. Luke was trying to show Jesus as a teacher who not only cared but one who would judge us.
Jesus is someone who looks at women, the poor, oppressed, and sees only good while it seems he looks at the rich people of the world and wonders whom they truly serve. I try to remember this in my life. I try not to get attached to material things because Jesus warns that this is not what our lives are about.
I see the Gospel of Luke differently but I know the one saying that truly touches my life is “For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be”. My treasure may be different every year but I try not to have it become material but something I know where I can truly put my heart for safe keeping. Jesus definitely taught me this as I read Luke.
