After not going to mass for 20 years my parents are attending mass weekly and taking communion I am happy they are there but have mentioned to them they need to go to confession but they haven’t and said they don’t need to they don’t except many church teachings. This bothers me because when they come to mass they come with my family and my wife is non catholic and doesn’t take communion and takes her Christian faith seriously. My wife hasn’t said anything about

It is right for you to be concerned, but I would go softly on raising them to your parents. Go softly and allow the graces of the sacraments work on your parents faith concepts. Be there to guide them if they raise issues, but be thankful at this stage that they have returned to their faith. Let the Holy Spirit work within its own time. God Bless.

You might want to talk to your pastor on how to proceed. They appearently do not understand the teaching of the Church on receiving Communion in the state of grace only. Maybe they didn’t have a good basic Catholic upbrining. You don’t want to do anything to scare them away for sure, but they do need some help that maybe Father could give. Doesn’t look like they are going to listen to you. Your wife may think just cause they are Catholic, they can recieve. If she asks, just explain their lack of understanding. God Bless, Memaw

Pray for your patents and maybe add another Lenten sacrifice with the intention of their complete conversion. I will pray as well. Try to lead by example more than with words. It means more that way.

My parents understand what they are doing I have had a number of conversations how I am glad they are going but went over how it is important to go to confession and how I go at least every three months even for just venial sins

If they understand what they are doing you have probably done what you could. You can’t stop them from taking Communion. I agree that asking the parish priest to have a chat with them could be more effective. If you think that they are receiving unworthily, perhaps the priest has the right to know so he can decide what should be done. This is probably the most that you can do.

I should be patient about 20% of my parish is catholics returning or converts and our parish priest has a way of moving people along at a pace that produces true and great conversions

That’s great! I’m excited for you that your parents are coming back to the Catholic Church and started attending Mass again!

Conversion and re-conversion is a gradual process. The example that you and your wife set, along with the guidance of a good and holy priest, will go a long way in that re-conversion process. Since it’s Lent, it’s an especially good time to remember prayer and fasting for your parents. Your parish priest might even help prompt their going to Confession at some point during the Lenten season (or even after, during Easter season with Divine Mercy Sunday.) God is good. Trust Him, pray and be patient. Remember that like the rest of us, your parents are a work in progress. God’s not done with them yet.
