Most of the deacons I know tend to be liberal because most of them were ordained decades ago. It is pretty hard to shake a deacon loose like they can with priests.

My class is mostly orthodox and it is causing some problems for the older crowd. You would not believe what some have said about the Eucharist, the Bible and the Pope.

I think I will be a pretty orthodox deacon God willing but I guess that depends on who is looking.

God Bless

PS In our diocese they will not ordain deacons anymore without full faculties to preach.

Deacon 2006-Good luck to you and your class. I was in the first class that our diocese ever trained.(7 year study program.) We have the second class being trained now. We had to pave the way for restoring the diaconate. The men in our class were called from their parish communities and so most enjoy great support from their parish, which some have been ministering in for many years. It’s a whole different situation when a priest is assigned by the bishop to a community, where no one has ever met him.

The deacon is called to the servant ministry of Jesus.

We have three deacons in our parish. I don’t know about two of them, but the one who has been there the longest is a definite liberal, as is his wife (she is the “real” deacon).

Hi Deacon:

God’s speed to you and your class! and Thank You!

This is an interesting thread. A parish near me has 8 deacons. I thought this was a lot, but I figured every parish had at least one. I’m surprised to learn that so many of you live in parishes that have none.

We have two deacons. One has been a deacon for over 25 years. I would call him liberal only because he doesn’t know any better. It’s quite obvious he was trained during the liberal 70’s. He told me you don’t have to go to Mass while you were on vacation. I told him he was wrong but he insisted it was true because “a priest had told him so”. Heck, I’ve had priests tell me birth control was okay as well as premarital sex.

Our other deacon seems to be more orthodox.

My Parish does not have a deacon. In fact in our county, there are only three deacons all in a larger town [and I believe in one of three parishes there.].

In the Parish to our west [another county and another diocese], they have three.

Sad to report, that I have not been impressed by any of them from what little I have seen while visiting those Parishes. They all appear to be grabbing for more than what they were ordained for.

Perhaps I am mistaken.

We have two deacons, and I’d say they are both fairly lax. The senior one, I’d say is something of a chameleon. He postures himself as a conservative when with conservatives, and as a liberal when with liberals. Recently, he phoned the home of a non-Catholic family I know whose son was marrying a Catholic girl in our Church. The couple had been living together. He left a message telling them not to put the same address on their paperwork to the Church for marriage prep…

So, the Catholic deacon calls a non-Catholic home and leaves a message telling the fornicating couple to lie to the Church authorities so that they can have that pretty church wedding they want…I’m sure it made a great impression.

Did he learn this in Sex Scandal Coverup 101?

On the altar, our deacons are often as giddy and giggley as a young schoolgirl. They observe little children being little children, and it just tickles them so that they lose all composure.

Still, I am certain that in their hearts, they mean well!

My parish deacon is a convert from Southern Baptist. He is a huge man, imposing, and when he preaches, he PREACHES – all the outward signs of a Southern Baptist preacher – the swaying, the very emotional delivery, the peculiar pronunciation of “Jesus”: JEEE-susssss.

He is an excellent homilist, and is, for the most part, orthodox. He does have a couple of liturgical foibles; the most annoying (to me) is that he wanders around the entire church during the Sign of Peace.

I love it! You are so lucky to have this wonderful man. I love really good preaching…after all, I grew up with it, and hear it at my husband’s Eveangelical church…There’s nothing quite like it.
But…I wouldn’t trade it for the Eucharist! That was a decision I had to make in the not too distant past, and I am not sorry…HOWEVER, I do wish Catholic priests woud PREACH!

overly generous with the chrism oil!

So much so that nearly two weeks after our son’s baptism, his head still smells of chrism!

How lovely!

We have several deacons. The only one who preaches is orthodox. The rest are generous with their time in the service of our large parish. We are blessed!

I’ve only seen the Deacon maybe a handful of times. He seems fairly conservative, but I don’t know him well enough to know if this is the correct conclusion.

What I can say is he’s L-O-U-D. He’s the only person I’ve ever heard that didn’t need a microphone. My priest is soft-spoken and you must pay attention to hear him, even with the amplification, but this Deacon would blow our eardrums out if he ever used it.

Sounds a bit like St. Stephen. Only he hurt the ears of his congregation in a different way 😃

God Bless

Our parish has 8 (eight) deacons - really! They all seem quite orthodox in their beliefs. Does anyone belong to a parish with a larger deacon population?

8 deacons!! They must get great dental or something 😉 . Your parish is truly blessed. For there to be that much interest in the diaconate you must have a very orthodox church. My parish has 2 deacons, and my former parish had 2 as well. They all have seemed to stick to the “safe” subjects (love thy neighbor), so none of the choices in the poll would fit any of them.

If it’s the dental, it’s their little secret! I agree with your assessment. The credit goes to the work of the Holy Spirit through the 3 pastors we’ve had during the 30 + years of the parish; they have all been extraordinarily Godly men

My husband is in study now too–and will be a strong orthodox deacon…I believe!!

You’re right about the older men, typically. Sometimes my husband feels like he’s making waves–you know, referring to CHURCH documents in class and other such nonsense! 😉

God bless you!

Good for him … many blessings for your whole family!
