Well, the rectory was and whomever got in turned his bedroom upside down. Took all his valuable belongings including his cash, cradit cards, Christmas giftcards he received as presents, his deceased parents’ wedding rings, a silver chalice he was given by his parents when he was first ordained, credit cards, passport, checkbook, license, etc… you name it, they took it all!
All while he was getting the church ready on Tuesday for Ash Wednesday.
I cannot believe someone would have the guts to break into a priest’s home.
Another thing that’s bad about this is that the robber(s) took his extra set of car keys and the control panel for his home alarm system. He didn’t turn the alarm on since he was coming in and out of the rectory (which is directly attached to the church).
I feel so sad for my pastor. He’s the nicest person you could ever meet. I cannot imagine how he must be feeling. What could I do to help him? Some of the parishoners have asked him to stay with them or them sleep at the rectory with him. I know he needs a lot of help right now. The chalice his parents gave him was valued at $12,500 and his insurance will only cover $7,500 of the losses. He wrote a bit about this on the bulletin for this weekend. He says he wants to forgive the person/people who did this to him, but he finds it hard. He said that because we’re in Lent that more than ever he has to try, especially because he is our pastor and has to set an example to all of us.
I feel so bad for him.
ETA: After Mass this morning, while I was waiting in line to say hi to him, I heard him telling a parishoner what happened. That’s how I found out. Since he always greets me with a hug (ever since I lost my baby and because that’s how he usually greets parishoners he knows well), I told him I was really sorry about what happened. But I feel horrible since I just remembered I didn’t ask him if there was anything I could do for him.
