I realized that like so many other catholic teenagers like me, I am on my phone a lot. I realized that everyday I spend hours on electronics and I don’t play outside as much. I do use my phone for some good but it also causes almost all of my doubt. Be it saints, the mass, or the pope I’ve struggled with it all till I bought ‘Catholicism for dummies’ (helpful💯) Should I use my phone only for calls and Catholic stuff or is that too stuck up for this electric age?

I wouldn’t go that far, but it’s good to mind how much time we spend on these things.

If this is still something you’re struggling with, then you do need to get to the root of the problem. I’m not exactly sure what you mean that using your phone caused the doubts-- perhaps there are things related to the phone and electronics in general that you need to cut out of your life, but that doesn’t mean not using it altogether. As you mentioned, we can use these things for good. We just need to mind what we’re using them for, and how much we’re using them.

But I guess that you’ve realized it is a good first step! 👍

I use pintrist a lot so there a lot of anti catholic memes and anti christian theology on there

Nothing wrong with that. They need to have a cell phone that can make calls only for an emergency that is not a smartphone. Your right, its distracting to always have a computer on you.

A phone is not really a very interesting gadget, to me most people use it in place of a fidget spinner, or if you are from the 80s a rubiks cube.

Just use your phone in moderation. Make sure when you’re with real people, you pay attention to them and try doing real things. Use your phone as a tool to help you, but don’t get addicted. I used to have some friends who would invite me to hang out with them, I would drive 15 mins to the house they were at, and everybody would just be sitting there staring at their phone and the only interaction was showing other people social media things. I’ve gone out to eat and had a girl text half the time instead of talking, showing me her phone and her texts were more important than me. Just don’t be like those people.

And another bit of advice is don’t fall for the social media nonsense like most youth do. I only ever had about ten people on Snapchat who I actually cared about, for example. Why have so many people on SC, IG, and FB you never see and don’t truly know or care for? I know so many people that will spend so much time watching stories of a hundred people they only met once or are just acquaintances instead of doing something productive or actually living their own life.

My mobile helps me spiritually.

I have the Bible on it which I read, I have many prayers on there, I use it as an alarm to remind me about my Novenas in case I forget, I also have scrabble etc. to stop me daydreaming about things.

I do not keep it next to my bed at night though.

Indeed. I have a bible and a LOTH app on mine.

To be honest CAF is probably the most time consuming thing I do onilne.

This is something you could fast from. For example, you could start with using it only as a phone (or include using it for actual schoolwork if that is required for your studies) on Fridays, or during the 3 o’clock hour, or some other time meaningful to you.

Aside from the spiritual benefits, it will also strengthen you will and give you better self-discipline abput using the phone.

It’s time to get back to basics. Go soak up the sun. Run, jump, have some fun!
