Hi all,

I had started the thread a while back, Please pray for my preemie. Well, I thought you would be happy to know he was discharged from the hospital the 13th. He is doing really well. We were told that he has a murmur or hole in the heart, which they said is due to the prematurity. Basically, the wall between the upper two chambers didn’t seal all the way, but that it should correct itself. If not they say they do a non invasive surgery around 3 yrs. old through the arm or leg. But, we’re praying that that wall seals itself. We go to the cardiologist in a month. Do any of you know about this type of situation. The doctors and nurses didn’t make it as if it was something really bad. Any experiences out there?

But besides that he is wonderful and learning to nurse well.
God bless you all and thank you for your prayers and kindness!!!

Thanks be to God:) I will pray for your babies heart:) And congradulations:clapping:

Congratulations!!!

When my wife and I were in the hospital we were right next to the infant intensive care unit. What a cross it must be to have a baby that needs such treatment. May God bless you and you’re little one.

Monica:

Congratulaitons on your miracle (all children are miracles…but some are more so 😉 )

I am familiar with the procedure you are speaking of. Actually, I’m an instructor of Invasive Cardiovascular Technology and Medicine. The murmur your child has seems to be from what is called “atrial septal defect” (ASD). There are many types of these, but from the sounds of it, this may be a Patent Foramen Ovale. It results from an area of the wall that separates the upper chambers (called the atrial septum) does not seal right after birth. ALL babies have this hole while in their mothers womb (it is necessary for the ciruclation of the baby), and normally seals shortly after birth.

Sometimes it does not seal right away for MANY reasons (development being one). Often times they do seal. It is relatively easy to look for using ultrasound machines (yes, like the ones used to look at the baby in your womb)!

IF necessary, there is a procedure that can close the hole artificially. This closure device is inserted via a cardiac catheterization procedure, and has come a long ways in the last few years! There are some risks involved (most are minor!), but your physician would inform you of any specific to your child. Often, this is NOT necessary.

Congratulations. Enjoy your child. I will have my family say a special prayer to Our Lady tonight for his continued health!

Pax Christi!!

Thank-you, for the update, I will continue praying for you. 🙂

Congratulations Monica. I am so gald your baby is home.

My husband had this same hole but we never knew it until 3 yrs. ago. He went through a procedue to have a little piece put on either side of the hole and it closes it up then. He found out only after having a stroke. (He’s completely recovered and back to work)

I know they do this procedure for mainly children. He actually got his letter from Loyola Hospital on Ronald McDonald Stationary. However, you doctor will do a bubble echocardiogram to make sure the hole closes up. The procedure was simple same day and he has been fine. I am sure it is simple for children too. I am so glad they can help the little ones now that have this.

Keep us posted and we will keep you in our prayers.

Congrats to you! I know how excited you must feel to finally have your “little bundle of joy” home with you!

Congratulations!!! My daughter was a 26 weeker with the same problem. However, the doctors gave her two rounds of inducin for the PDA opening and it seemed to work (according to the ultrasounds). She still gets occasional murmurs, but her pediatrician pretty said it comes and goes so nothing to worry about. I know one of my daughter’s NICU roommates recently had his PDA closed.

God Bless you and your baby. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask 🙂

I was born with a ventricular septal defect. Pretty much what PAPH was talking about except between the lower chambers of the heart.

I’m happy to say that was thirty years ago, and mine has since closed completely on its own. I have NEVER had any problems, nor was I ever told to avoid activity.

The “hole” or murmur was gone by the time I was 2 years of age.

Blessings to you and to your family!

Congratulations!! You sound like a wonderful mom. I shall pray for your little family.

Love and Peace

Praise be first of all!!

My littlest brother was a preemie (25 weeks gestated). He also had a hole in his heart, though his was severe enough that they had to correct it while he was in the incubator (i cant even imagine open heart surgery on a heart smaller than a marble). he was so small and his tissue was so thin they had to essentially seal up the incisions with what amounts to medical superglue. he used to have a scar running from his sternum to his spine on the left side, but now the scar is only a 4 inch long mark beneath the left shoulder blade (a testament to how much he has grown).

I am glad that your child does not have to suffer that.

Congratulations!!! I too was born with a hole in my heart, and I am happy to say that was 25 wonderful years ago. I will be praying for you and your baby, and the Doctors!

God Bless!

Oh we are just overjoyed to have our boy home!! Thank you all so much for your kindness. PAPH, you are exactly right. They say it is ASD. And all of you who have similar heart diagnosis, it is comforting to see that you are all alright. We go to the cardiologist in about a month. I will definately update you.
In the meantime, the little one is so sweet, so small and becoming better and better at nursing. He is at 4lbs. 10 oz. as of Fri. He was discharged Wed. at 4 lbs. 5 oz. Mama’s milk to the rescue 😉

peace

Thanks you God!

My preemie has been home for three years now and I thank God every day.
