My priest didn't give me penance

Hi,

I went to confession today, and I confessed all my sins. I also told my priest I have been thinking of becoming a nun. He said I would make a good nun and a good wife, and mother. After I confessed my sins, my priest gave me absolution. But he didn’t give me a penance. Am I still forgiven of my sins?:confused: I said a prayer after confession just in case I said 2 Our Father’s and 2 Hail Mary’s I thanked the Lord for helping me make an honest confession, and giving me courage to go to confession.🙂 This was my 5th or 6th time to confession. Was my confession invalid even if the priest didn’t give me a penance and I still prayer afterwards?:confused: I just said those prayers just to be safe, cause I would feel strange if I didn’t pray after confession, and I felt it was the right thing to do even if my priest didn’t give me a penance to do.🙂 Can someone help me please?

Don’t worry, Amy. It’s not the penance that forgives your sins. Its the combination of your confessing the sins with sorrow and the priest saying the absolution. Jesus was there, saw the whole thing and forgave you. I’m sure He was pleased with the prayers you said afterward, also. The priest just forgot, I’m sure, and that does not make it invalid. Relax and be thankful.

You did just great. All forgiven. 🙂 Your agonizing over this lack of penance perhaps was more of a penance to yourself than what the priest might have given you.

That happened to me last time I went to comfession too. It was a face to face confession. I even asked the priest if I didn’t have to do something. He said something like what I had confessed weren’t really bad sins, more like questions I had…
(I have noticed that here in Switzerland the church tends to be, generally, less formal than in the US.)

He gave me absolution and I fwelt forgiven. 🙂

Hi,
As a priest, there are many times that I do not give a penance. The penitent, whoever he/she is has already done plenty of penance. To have them do more may do more harm than good. I usually try to tell the penitent that I am not giving a penance. If I don’t there are some penitents that are very troubled by not having a penance.
 
I too get distressed when I am not given a penance. I think it is a very important part of going to confession.
 
Got a full Rosary yesterday for a penance. I am not sure, but this is the 2nd time I got that from a priest of this particular religious order. I am going to start going every two weeks.
