I’m a new Catholic convert (grew up Protestant). When I began to expore the Catholic faith, one of the things I didn’t dive into very deep is devotion to Mary (the mother of Jesus). It was not necessary for Confirmation, so I just didn’t look into it much.
Today, I find myself drawn to the Rosary and other Marian devotions daily. I’ve learned of a group of folk who consecrate themselves to Mary for the purpose of being led closer to Christ. I have cerebral knowledge of the fact that Mary does not get the highest devotion all Christians give to God, but here’s my problem: some Marian devotions appear to honor Mary in the same way one honors the Trinity.
Here are some examples: “My Queen and my Mother, I give myself entirely to you…” and “Virgin Mother of God, Mary Immaculate, we unite ourselves to you…” and one prayer I read this monring after receiving the Eucharist, “…I have received thy most beloved Son…With love I humbly return Him and offer Him to thee…”
I’m comfortable with Mary’s Heavenly Queenship, her unique place in the history of salvation, praying the Rosary, and even imploring her to pray for various special needs. However, when I read these lines from the three prayers sampled above, I’m taken back quite a bit. Shouldn’t I only give myself entirely to the Trinity, desire to unite myself with the Trinity, and once received in the Eucharist, hold on to the Real Presence for all it’s spiritual graces?
