My Problems With The Church

You can’t be serious … there’s all the difference in the world between the saving blood of Christ which He commands us to drink so as to have eternal life, and the blood of animals (had any black pudding lately, by the way?).
Acts 15:29 makes no distinction between the blood of animals and the blood of humans. It says do not drink blood…period!

Less than 100 years after the time of Jesus, Saint Ignatius of Antioch was writing that to deny the Real Presence was a heresy. If that belief was something that didn’t come about until hundreds of years after the time of Jesus then you might have a leg to stand on. But it’s a historical fact that the early fathers of the Church and the faithful as a whole all believed in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.

To claim that you know better today than those who learned the faith almost 2000 years ago directly from the Twelve or from the people the Twelve personally instructed just doesn’t make any logical sense. Their interpretation of Scripture and Tradition MUST be correct. You’re challenging what was taught by those who wrote down the teachings that are contained in the books/letters of the New Testament. If they were wrong on such a central and widely taught issue as the Real Presence, we may as well throw away the entire New Testament.

The writings of the early fathers are not inspired Word of God. Errors certainly had time to creep in within just a few decades of Christ’s death. Acts 15:29 (which is indeed the inspired Word of God) says we are not to drink blood.

ooops! Here it is:

"…And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine
, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom." Matthew 26:28-29

Obviously if Jesus just turned the cup of wine into his actual blood, he would not have called it “wine” immediately afterward. From a biblical standpoint it is very reasonable to believe that the wine was to be a representation of his blood.
He was speaking of the FOURTH cup of wine he would drink on the cross before He said, “it is finished.”

Really you are saying that YOU are the inspired word of God, because you take ONE verse, separated it from what Jesus himself said. You separated it from what the first Christians practiced. In the context, Paul is saying don’t drink blood of animals offered as sacrifice to idols. I also believe in another place, it says it’s ok to eath the meat offered to idols, if you are hungry. I’ll have to look for it.

Yes, there was heresy. The that did not believe in the Real Presence. Do you really think the Church has been in error for 2,000 years until you came along?

1 Corinthinthians 10:16:
16
The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?
This is the third cup, the Cup of Blessing to which Jesus refers at the Last Supper.

Three things for you to consider
  1. a conversion story I really enjoyed:

  1. something I learned about my faith after all the RCIA classes were over and I had audited a year of seminary classes:

  1. 6 minutes of a great video that will get you really pumped:

probably too much for one sitting but take it a little at a time.

welcome!

So why did Jesus command up to drink his blood? Even if he meant it only figuratively it would seem to fly in the face of your personal interpreation of one verse of Scripture.

The Church had to know about the existence of Acts 15:29 when she declared Acts to be divinely inspired (and you trust her in that declaration, interestingly enough). The Church had also taught the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist long enough for it to be widespread and commonly accepted before 108AD, the year St. Ignatius is thought to have been martyred, as he wrote that it is a heresy to deny the Real Presence. Rather than a schism or heresy there was total acceptance of his writing. How in the world could this be, unless your interpretation is incorrect and that of the Church is correct? There were heresies left and right in the early centuries of the Church. There isn’t one that denies the Real Presence until Berengarius of Tours, a full 900 years after the death of St. Ignatius.

At the council at Jerusalem the Gentile Christians were told that they were not to drink blood!

"You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality. You will do well to avoid these things…" Acts 15:29

This is terribly problematic for the catholic interpretation of drinking the actual blood of Jesus Christ at the Mass.

Sorry, but you sound like a Jehovahs Witness. Christ said to DRINK HIS BLOOD which He offers to us for the remission of our sins and for our salvation. We do as He says. This is where private interpretation leads you to misunderstanding. Please read and understand
without interprtation. It is clear and simple.

When I responded to you before, I left out the biggest flaw of all in your above comment.

Jesus never called it wine after the Institution. That claim you made is false. He called it “fruit of the vine”…Jesus is the vine. The Precious Blood is the fruit of that Vine. ("I am the true vine; and my Father is the husbandman." John 15:1)

This is why it’s essential to not change the words of Scripture, not one little bit.

That is an awesome observation! 👍

That’s a good point, and a brilliant play on words if that was Christ’s intention since he did call himself the “vine”… But that still does not support a literal interpretation for Christians to be drinking real physical blood.

To those why claim since Jesus said his body was “real” food… Look above to see that he also said he was a “true” vine! He obviously wasn’t claiming to be a true, literal plant with leaves! This was simply the way Jesus taught.
🙂

Boy, you seem to be making a mountain out of a mole hill. Christians are not vampires. We do not drink actual, physical blood. Jesus said that the wine is
His blood ( not represents it ). When He said “do this in remembrance of Me” he
gave the apostles the authority and power to consecrate the wine, ( which is handed down by apostolic sucession ) which then becomes His precious Blood.

The statement/question you come up with is what happens when you do not
understand scripture and interpret it.

None 🙂

RCIA starts in September! 😃
Congratulations :hug1:

There will almost certainly be at least one point during RCIA when you’ll have great doubts again. It happens to pretty much everyone. I’ll keep you in my prayers for whenever that day arrives.

Of course catholics are not vampires. But the catholic church says you most certainly do drink the real blood of Christ. But when you read the gospel of John, you see how Christ spoke. Jesus was using a figure of speech when he spoke of drinking his blood.

For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. John 6:55-57

I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. John 15:1-4

Look at these passages from the Book of John. These are truly awesome passages, but it’s pretty clear that Jesus is speaking in literal terms.
