I gave her the famed list of Scripture and she replied with the classic “But it’s CHrist’s crucifixion that makes us holy, not” ect.
Here’s what I replied to her (I hope the Spirit was with me on this one!):
"You’re right. We are made holy by accepting Christ! In baptism we recieve this beginning grace and again in Confirmation. In Catholicism, we become more holy and recieve God’s grace in prayer and Sacraments, but ultimately all this is possible because Christ gave the Perfect Sacrifice of Himself on the Cross and opened Salvation to humanity. I’m sure we can both agree on that.
The proposition of Purgatory is not meant to doubt Christ’s beautiful Passion. We were perfectly forgiven, you’re right, but God’s Justice demands we give something back for the wrong we’ve done here. Again, look at Samuel 2 12:13-14…David has sinned. God fogives him and God’s forgiveness is perfect, but David still must suffer to truly learn the perfection and holiness of the forgiveness God gives.
Not everyone is sent to Purgatory. If you break one of the Ten Commandments as Christ taught them, we call that a Mortal sin in Catholicism. A mortal sin will send you to a place where you are forever seperated from God: hell. You freeley chose to go against Him, so you will not get to be with Him for eternity. However, if you repent for your sins through a change of heart and you are forgiven (which you will be if you are truly sorry because God loves you soooo much), but God still says “I forgive you, I love you, and through my Son’s Passion you are redeemed, but you need to make amends for what you did.” We haven’t really learned anything or grown as a Christian if we just say “sorry” and not correct what we did…where’s the love in that? Any sinner can just say “sorry”, but a truly sorry sinner will correct what they’ve done wrong. IF you don’t fix up the mess you made on Earth, you’ll have to do it somewhere…you’re not going to hell, but “nothing unclean shall enter Heaven”(Revelation 21:27) nothing having anything to do with sin or death can be where Eternal Life reigns…so where do you go?? Purgatory"
