My Protestant Mom asks "How can Joseph Pray for Us?" and my response

My Southern Baptist Mom responded to a post I placed on Facebook yesterday saying “Happy Feast of St. Joseph! St. Joseph, pray for us!” She responded: I mean this respectfully, but how can Joseph pray for us… My response was taken directly from the “Intercession of the Saints” tab from this website. Is there anything further I need to explain to her or was this enough for her to understand? I converted from Baptist to Catholic 5 years ago so I’m sure she will continue to question me.
 
The Catholic Church believes in the Communion of Saints. Death does not separate members of Christ’s Body, the Church. We are connected to the entire faithful, living on earth, and in heaven through God.

God will pass messages to His children.

Then how can anyone ask another to pray for them?

Oh but wait! That person is still alive here on earth,so it is not the same…says the non-Catholic

BINGO! Saints are NOT DEAD!
 
My response would have been - "Well mom - he just looks of at the Father on His throne and says, “Holy and gracious Father, Please send you graces upon…(Fill in the blank)”.

The basic issue probably relates to something called “soul sleep” which is a belief that those who have passed on “sleep” until the day of resurrection. The Catholic Church does not hold to this.
The Transfiguration of Jesus in the Gospels is a good rebuttal for this as is Jesus statement that the Father is a God of the living, not the dead.
At the transfiguration - Jesus was speaking to Moses - who Scripture says died - as well as Elijah. Further there is a reference in Matthew of the “saints who had fallen asleep” coming forth from their tombs and appearing to people in the holy city (Mt 27:52-53). No mention is made of the falling back asleep.

I’m sure others will give you better answers, but these were my thoughts.

A good question to invoke discussion - and understanding - would be to ask, “What makes you think he CAN’T pray for us?”

When I asked that question I was informed that all the righteous dead are asleep, and will stay asleep until the resurrection on the Last Day. Where they got that teaching I have no clue, because it is directly contradicted by the Holy Bible itself. If you point this incontrovertible fact out to your mother she might at least acknowledge that it is possible for St. Joseph to pray for us.

Large portions of the Book of Revelation describe the events in heaven before the Last Day, and those events clearly involve living beings already in heaven which are neither God nor His angels. The 24 elders, the martyrs under the altar, the 144,000, and the Great Multitude before the throne and before the Lamb… all of them are human beings, all of them are clearly alive and in heaven, all of them are able to talk to God anytime they want.
