This was a Guided, Directed, Silent Retreat. Guided in the sense that every morning we had a one hour talk from one of the spiritual directers to the whole group. Guided in the sense that we each had a spiritual directer assigned to us, and we met them for about 45 minutes each day. Silent from after supper on Sunday night to before Saturday lunch.:getholy:

My own spiritual director and talked over my life to the present, and what I planned for the future, including BSP/CFP. I am most certainly The Prodigal Son, returning to God after a lifetime of alcoholism, sexual sins, and much else. The main theme of the retreat, over and over again, was about God’s UNCONDITIONAL Love and Mercy for people like me.

But a strange thing also happened at the retreat. One of the talk was about that portion of Proverbs where Wisdom plays…PLAYS…at the foot of God’s worktable. We were urged to balance our spiritual life between prayers, work, and play. Books of mandalas had been supplied, so a few of us began to color the things. At the end of the retreat I had about a dozen completed mandalas posted on the wall, with a note inviting the others to take them home with them. They did. My spiritual directer insisted that I consider time with manadalas as playful prayer time, counting towards the two hours of prayer suggested by BSP/CFP.

Friday night I volunteered to spend one hour at the Adoration Of The Eucherist. My spiritual directer had evaluated my situation, and, like my previous directer, felt this was a better way to spend an hour then the set prayers of the LOTH. Indeed, the quiet meditation and contemplation of this hour seems to calm and center me far better then rote recitation of set prayers. Something to think about when I enter my Novice first year of formation.

A learning experience I will treasure for the rest of my life:thumbsup:

Andruschak, please describe one of your mandalas. I’m not familiar with them.

You mention “novice first year of formation”. Are you starting something?

I am happy that I was able to attend a retreat earlier this year (for those facing serious illness). It was my first Catholic overnight retreat (Friday afternoon to Sunday morning). The same retreat house also had a silent retreat recently. I hope that my wife will sometime have the desire to go to one of the retreats at the Dominican Retreat House in our diocese.

Mandalas are circular artwork that you color in yourself, as you choose, with any colors you choose. GOOGLE “coloring mandalas” to get an idea. You can find books of mandalas in most of the big book stores

The “formation” I mentioned has to do with two private Catholic lay groups, www.bspenance.org and www.penitents.org

Where did you do your retreat?

A monastery or something local?

It is about a 30 minute drive from where I live in Torrance, California. They have programs all year, as you will note from their web site. You might ask around to find out if there is a Catholic Retreat Center somewhere close to where you live:)

I am glad that you enjoyed your retreat… I myself have been trying to find a good place to retreat in my area for some time now.

I always associated Mandalas with Buddhism… Like the Tibetan Buddhist sand mandalas of different colors that would be used for meditation… I never heard of it being used for Christian meditation and personally would feel very uneasy doing so.

Anyways… I hope that God continues to bless you richly in your faith.

God bless

I understand your qualms, but as far as I am concerned, and this is shared by many Christians, a mandala is simply a tool. Ever see those circular windows in Churches? A tool is a tool, from whatever source. How we USE the tool is what matters.👍

Case in point…prayer beads. Which came first, the Rosary or Buddhist Mala beads?

Aye, I had remembered that we lived in the same area from a previous thread which is why I asked where you ended up going.

I have that one on my list as well as St. Andrew’s Abbey and Prince of Peace down south – those are both a bit further away for both of us but seem very interesting too.

Good to hear the one in PV was nice. 😃

It could be argued that those rose windows seen in many churches are mandalas, and in face a group of nuns in Europe has published a book of mandalas based on those church windows…
