My SD is against the Latin Mass

My worry is that a day will come, and it has began to arrive, when no priest or layman will remember the traditional rites and practices of the Church and will flee from them, misunderstanding them. I have talked to priests in this parish and others who have never seen a Latin mass or read any papal encyclicals before 1960.
Yup, that’s pretty much the way I see it heading as well.

tptb in Catholicism are shoe horned into maintaining the appearance and illusion of being ‘charitable’ while the PC crowd has their sabers drawn and show no mercy to established and time honored Christians traditions.

The OP is seriously upset about the way her spiritual director has spoken to her about communion on the tongue and attending a Latin Mass, so I think telling her to relax about the way she has been treated is discounting her feelings. She is not enjoying what is around her (her SD), which is why she posted. Also, criticizing the EF in a homily is in poor taste and does a diservice to not only the OP, but the Church as well. Not cool.

And can there really be “too much spiritual intensity?” I am sure many saints would disagree.

👍
We have to be careful to discern between spiritual intensity and emotional intensity.

Sometimes people have an inappropriate or “over-the-top” emotional reaction to something relatively small in the grand scheme of things. This is not the same as a deep spiritual intensity that yearns to see change that will advance the Kingdom of God.

Here’s an example of an inappropriate emotional reaction.

If an adult came to church topless, I think it would be appropriate to be very upset and disgusted, look away, move to another pew, possibly speak up and ask the adult to please go put on a top, make an appointment with the priest to talk the issue over, write the bishop if the priest was not interested in requiring parishioners to wear shirts, etc.

But if an adult comes to church wearing a Chicago Bears sweat-shirt, the above reaction would be, IMO, over-the-top. The more appropriate reaction would be an internal (therefore invisible) shrug and the unvoiced thought, “Nice of them to come to church dressed up to meet the Lord of the Universe.” And then perhaps the next thought should be, “Who am I to judge them? Perhaps it’s the only shirt they own, and perhaps they got it out of a dumpster. I’m sorry, Lord, for judging my fellow Christian.”

Make sense?

I’m thinking that perhaps the OP has some issues and doubts, and the Spiritual Director is not doing a good job of dealing with her, but instead, is choosing to deal with her by using flippant comments that he means as light-hearted humor. This approach might work well for some people, but it obviously isn’t working for the OP and seems to actually be making her doubts worse. I think she needs to find another SD who will know how to answer her questions and deal with her insecurities.

Ponies would have a difficult time in a Catholic church because often, there are no coat racks where they can hang their saddles.
Well, they wouldn’t visit anyway, because they are sede vacantes, unless they are in full traditional regalia.

Someone could start a thread on ponies and someone would argue against it.
Look down in the Back Fence section. 😃

I didn’t want to de-rail this thread or take it further off-topic.

Perhaps the Moderator would be able to move all the pony comments down to the the new thread and we can continue the argument…I mean, discussion…without getting this thread off-track (That’s a pony joke, BTW. Off-TRACK…get it?! Ha ha ha ha !) Thanks!

Thank you for reading please help me with some advice if you can
Thank you. God bless you :gopray:
God Bless you as well and Happy Easter.
My advice for what it is worth:twocents: is to find another spiritual director.
Don’t have any other comments of worth as your specific situation is unlike others’ specific situations.

I’m not discounting her feelings at all, but sometimes when we get overly upset by some things it is indeed useful to take a step back, and try not to view the issue with such a degree of intensity. In other words try to relax.

And anyway, it’s nobody’s business whether or not an individual Catholic chooses to receive Communion on the tongue or attend Latin Mass (or not). I can choose, you can choose and so can she, without having to ask anyone whether or not we ought to do so.

If her SD doesn’t like the EF or doesn’t the practice of people receiving Communion on the tongue then he too is entitled to hold such an opinion. It’s not as if he’s going about forbidding people to attend Latin Mass or refusing to give people Communion on the tongue.
She is not enjoying what is around her (her SD), which is why she posted. Also, criticizing the EF in a homily is in poor taste and does a diservice to not only the OP, but the Church as well. Not cool.
We don’t know what he said. She may have even misinterpreted what he said (easy to do if a person is overly concerned about a particular issue).
And can there really be “too much spiritual intensity?” I am sure many saints would disagree.
Perhaps my wording was wrong there. But I do feel that an over-emphasis on our own particular ‘spiritual journey’ can sometimes lead to spiritual ‘navel-gazing’ resulting in a disconnection with our fellow parishioners. Sometime we do need to look around us rather than look within us.

Thank you for your replies. I didn’t mean it to be a bait thread. I was just seeking opinions on what has happened. I will try not to base too much on feelings from now on. But though the thing is I think you do need to be happy in what you are doing. Time will tell what Gods will is. As for the depression thing actually I am in a way depressed as I am going through a time of transition medically. But it doesn’t worry me majorly.
I do believe both forms of the Mass are beautiful. But I guess my concern was how my director seemed to be in disagreement with me. Also yes I do possibly rely on him too much I agree. I have been trying to be obedient to him to see if I could survive in religious life. I have somehow now become too dependent on him. I will try to to be more independent from now on which is slowly happening.

Thank you 🙂 God bless

Anywho, so that day after I said some negative things to my SD about the Latin Mass to my utter horror his homily that night was based around the negative aspects of the Latin Mass, he was saying it’s all rituals why do they feel the need to do that, they don’t like change he kept emphasizing that they don’t like change. I was so upset and could not sleep that whole night.
Anyway, so I felt the pang to want to go to the Latin Mass come back, I rang my SD and said do you mind if I go? He said that’s fine so you can get it out of your system. Then he proceeded to say why do these people feel the need to listen in another language that’s not normal, then he ended with “you’ll see”.

Also I didn’t mention that for a while at the OF I was kneeling and receiving Communion on the tongue. My SD pulled me up on it saying it is causing disunity and it’s like I’m trying to get attention and that people who usually do that are mentally ill.
Yeah, I’m really not sure what others mean by we don’t really know what this priest has said or done. His comments and actions seem pretty darn clear to me. Even if the OP didn’t say it exactly the same way as he did. I have seen NO priests ridicule the “old” ways many a time. Nothing new or surprising here folks. Except that it seems to becomin gmore and more acceptable.

I fully expect to hear more and more of it from some of my own parish priests in the coming months.

It’s why I am planning on switching parishes to the one local parish that has a priest who embraces tradition and celebrates the Latin mass.

Christine, why do you feel you need to get permission, or even approval from anyone (SD or not) to attend the EF Mass, or kneel and receive Communion on the tongue. You are entitled to do so as a Catholic.

Why do you feel the need to be obedient to your SD? He’s just there to give you guidance if you want, you do NOT have to be obedient to him. That just seems quite strange to me, and quite unhealthy.

And if he disagrees with you then that’s his right, as it is yours to disagree with him.

If you are suffering from depression then it might be best to concentrate on getting that sorted our first. Seek medical help from your doctor.

Sometimes when your depressed, your mind exaggerates the importance of little things, and you read into things that aren’t there. Also try to be mindful that, without meaning to or being aware of it, you can become over-reliant on certain people and that can negatively affect their health. I’ve been there myself.

God Bless,

You are in my prayers.

Brendan

“The Latin Mass is like beer. You have to drink it in a few times to like it.”

This is priceless. My husband and I have been wanting to attend a Latin Mass at a nearby parish, and we have been a little nervous about it. I’m sure he will get a huge kick out of this quote (we fancy ourselves beer connoisseurs).
Full article on that very quote here: wdtprs.com/blog/2013/01/the-latin-mass-is-like-beer-you-have-to-drink-it-in-a-few-times-to-like-it-why-taylor-marshall-attends-the-tlm/

The bold part rised a couple of questions for me. Did your SD know this was your intention? He may have given you very different advice if he had known. Also, are you in contact with the vocations director for your diocese or any religious organizations (order, congregations, etc.)? If your SD doesn’t normally work with people who are discerning religious life, he may not have realized how literally you were taking his advice.

I recommend that you speak to the vocations director and ask him about orders that follow a more traditional life. You can often visit groups for a few hours or for “come and see” weekends. If the order/congregations charism is a match for you, you will not have as much trouble with obedience. Yes, strict obedience can be very difficult, but if you are with a like minded group, their direction will probably follow your natural inclinations better.

Hi.
Yes my Director has known since I started seeing him almost 2 years ago about my desire to be a nun. I have visited a couple of contemplative orders such as Carmelites and Redemptoristines and also an active order called the Sisters of Nazareth. I am in the process of trying to get better in health though which may take a few more years. So basically it is really up to God what comes about I guess.

As to the comment about being happy… What’s wrong with wanting to be happy. God wants what is good for us as long as it is the right thing. To be happy is not a bad thing as long as you are not doing the wrong thing…

If someone told me that to kneel to receive the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ was “mentally ill” then I would never speak to that person again.

People who hold viewpoints do so for various reasons. I would assume that not a few people who hold that particular viewpoint are in need of an exorcist. It is certainly a viewpoint that is absolutely against Church teaching, which forbids the denial of Communion on the grounds that the recipient chooses to kneel (even when the norm is reception while standing… reception cannot be forbidden simply for kneeling).

In general, do not listen to people who are against the Church. It is bad for your spiritual life, and in the end that’s the only life anyone actually has.

I agree that God desires us to be happy and there is wrong with wanting that. I don’t think what you said is at all the same as a person who wants to go against church teaching so they can be “happy.” They do not have the right definition of the word.

On the question of your SD knowing about your desire to be a nun, that is very good. Hopefully he was able to give you some direction there. It is, however, a different issue to determine to obey him in all things as if he were your superior in religious life. That is something outside of his area of authority, and it doesn’t sound like he really realized that you were doing that.

In any case, it doesn’t seem like you too are a good match and so I would talk over the situation with him and explain that you will be seeking spiritual direction elsewhere.

I will be praying for your health issues!
