My sister had an abortion

She is not Catholic but DH and I are. She did a home pregnancy test at our house and it came back as negative but to be 100 percent positive she was going to do blood work. We talked a lot about it and she swore she would never have an abortion, that is was murder and she would never do it. I honestly thought everything was ok that she really wasn’t pregnant but the blood work came back positive. She went and had an abortion. And I didn’t know till after the fact. So in one day I found out that I was an aunt but then the baby was gone. I am having a hard time with it on how to deal with my emotions. I am disgusted with her and so horribly sad that she did this grave sin. She has seemed to turn more away from God after this experience and get deeper into her pagan lifestyle. I don’t know if my mom played a part in it. More than likely as the child would have been an great inconvenience to her. She wishes she never had kids in the first place Has anyone else dealt with this sort of thing?

Thats sad, for sure. Try to stay positive and believe that God can convert her heart despite this act. Learn about some positive stories that women who had abortions ended up turning to God and loving Him. Or doctors who performed many many abortions had a conversion and renounced abortion as an atrocity.

I do know people very close to me who had abortions. They regret them now and have accepted God`s forgiveness. I think you should be forgiving to her because she is not Christian. Convey to her that God knows how awfull and weak we all are, and still suffered torture to love us.

P.S. I know thats hard to do and easy to say. Just dont rely on her reactions to inspire you, but Jesus` love and goodness.

I agree. Put some space between you for sure. When and if you do speak, avoid contempt and think of a way to show your admiration for Jesus, or remember something you have done that was wrong and confess as a gesture of friendship and compassion.

But dont feel like you need to preach to her by any means. That should only be done to those who are seeking and those who are in the faith.

Its easier to be pulled down than for you to pull someone up. So we all need to be honest with ourselves and know our limits.

Remember, this woman is not at peace with God. Dont be hard on her. But dont let her bring you down, either.

This is sacramentally invalid, and generally incorrect information. It looks to be from an unapproved vision of some kind, though the link is broken.

For a sacramental baptism to be valid, it must involve water being poured over the head of the person to be baptized with the formula “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit” said at the same time. If the person is believed to be dead, then they may be conditionally baptized in the same manner, with the formula saying “If you can be baptized, I baptize you…etc” said.

One cannot baptize another person without these elements present. See here.

The Church teaches that we don’t know the fate of infants who die without baptism, but teaches that we can hope for their eternal salvation. OP, I am terribly sorry for your loss. Remember that you may hope that your niece or nephew is in Jesus’ arms right now. Even if he or she isn’t, he or she is enjoying perfect natural happiness, a state we’d never attain here.

May God in His infinite Mercy bless your sister, her unborn child, your mother, and you. We ALL need Christ in our lives; some are more open to Him than others so we continue to pray that they one day are more open to receive His graces.

I can understand your joy then anger/resentment/disappointment towards your sister. If I may offer this; perhaps a change of perspective is in order. You may have had anticipatory joy that you would soon become an aunt and foresaw the many great events and activities of your future niece/nephew. This is an inwardly focused emotion. Through the grace of God, you and/or your sister will have children in the future and you will realize these joyous events in reality. For now, your sister walks a very dark path and needs God more than ever. God could have sent angels to walk with each of us (in addition to our guardian angels!) and to guide us step by step. Rejoice! God’s chosen you to be His emissary. Take some time to grieve, collect your emotions, gird yourself spiritually in prayer, then do God’s Will as best you can. The Holy Spirit will be with you. Don’t worry about what you will say or do to help your sister; focus on being there for her and being the messenger of God that He created you for.

I am so sorry and you and family are in my prayers. The way you are feeling now is indeed understandable but you have to forgive and love your sister. That does not mean condoning what she did but to be aware that the emotions you are feeling now will be much more so for your sister when/if she comes to the realization of what she did. You will need to be there for her and if you do not forgive her you will not be able to love her as you should when that time comes.

I know…a lot easier to say then do but nevertheless that is what we are called to do.

Although I know you must mean well, none of this is Church teaching.
Moreover, the Church does not teach Limbo.
We entrust these Holy Innocents to the loving arms of Christ.
They cannot be Baptized after death. That is a Mormon construct.
Pray for their parents. Surely the God of mercy smiles on these children.

I agree with most of what you said except, 'confess something you have done wrong as a gesture of friendship." I do not agree with that. Confessing ones sin to make someone else feel better is not my idea of helping them. You could say ," God loves you and HE will forgive you if your truly sorry. God Bless, Memaw
