Heb 1:2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

It would seem to me that if there were any person left to speak to us directly from God, it would have to be in the last days.

So, the last days means what?

Was Jesus’ time limited?

Yes, His last days were shortly and quickly coming to a close.

Luk 22:37 For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.
Psa 88:3 For my soul is full of troubles: and my life draweth nigh unto the grave.
Psa 102:23 He weakened my strength in the way; he shortened my days.

"In these last days refers to Jesus’ last days before the new creation were to be inaugurated.

He did both.
As The Prophet who spoke with God face to face, he doesn’t get to do both. Everything doctrinal that Joseph uttered must be true, or everything he says can be questioned (even what’s contained in the D&C).

All utterances from mankind must be measured against the theme of the whole bible, otherwise, are misleading.

Misleading happens because people accept without research what is given to believe via the different beliefs and are carried away by every wind and doctrine.

Therefore:2Ti 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Everything in the “canon” of mormon “scripture” can be questioned. The BOM, POGP,D&C,etc are all inventions of JS or his henchmen.

No, popes cannot “pick and choose” which past teachings are “canon”. Ex cathedra statements are nearly always clarifications on things that have never been addressed before, and which need definition for the faithful. Ex cathedra statements do not contradict the teachings of popes past.
Yep. So? We don’t contradict either, just claify. Show me one thing in the scriptures which has been changed by a later prophet.

Who says doctrine must be in the D&C to be canonical? Joseph Smith never said that. Joseph doesn’t have the freedom to make doctrinal errors. He claimed to have private chats with Jesus about doctrine. There’s no room for error under that criterion. Joseph clearly believed the things he taught outside the D&C were doctrinal. Why are you doubting his word? How can you (or any LDS leader) pick and choose which to believe. If the Prophet says X and Y are true, they must both be true or he is a false prophet, even if X and not Y end up in the D&C. A self-proclaimed prophet who hears the voice of God doesn’t get to make mistakes. It really is that simple.

The pope doesn’t claim to have fireside chats with Jesus about doctrine. Joseph did make that claim. He is thereby held by a much higher standard. Someone who speaks one on one with God about doctrinal matters doesn’t get to make errors. If he does, then his credentials are called into question.

Joseph Smith and the Pope are not comparable. The Pope doesn’t have sit down time with Jesus and doesn’t have to review the teachings of someone who claimed to hear God’s voice in his head telling him doctrinal truths.

If it’s not in the standard works, it’s not doctrine

how about the standard works themselves? those have changed. polygamy was changed in the standard works. priesthood restrictions would qualify.

You said above that your people can pick and choose what is “canon” and what isn’t. Explain how that is done without contradicting some teachings?

That right there is the best reason to not be Mormon. The horror!

No.

Once again, the non-Mormons and ex-Mormons GET IT WRONG!!!

Man, you can’t trust them for an instant, twisting everything (muttering to self)

It’s lime jello with PINEAPPLE, marshmallows and coconut, with endless repeats of “Napoleon Dynamite.”

I mean, if we are going to do Purgatory, we’d know how to do it RIGHT.

By gosh.

ibkc:

I’m waiting to see how Zerinus’ view of mormon scripture varies from mcmullen and the other posters here trolling abouts.

Don’t eat the jello, or you will get a ‘burning in your bosom.’

He did both.

Though you did not see anybody write ‘what he learned from God himself wasn’t canonized.’ I think you should be more careful with the quotes.
The words “hosemonkey” and “careful” just don’t fit in the same sentence. “Truth” is another word that wouldn’t fit in that sentence either.

No it wasn’t. The practice was changed not the doctrine. I don’t know what you mean by “priesthood restrictions”.

I didn’t say that. Read the original quote. I said the prophet can pick and choose what doctrines to clairfy or make doctrinal.

My mother in law makes lime jello with walnuts and carrots. Served on a lettuce leaf like a salad. I think that’s beyond purgatory myself.

Actually, you said this:

And yes, Joseph’s successors can pick and choose which of his statements are canon.

And anyway, either distinction is not how the Catholic Church works. There is no “picking and choosing” by Popes on what to “make doctrinal.” Before a Pope makes an ex cathedra statement, issues can be studied and prayed about by members of the Church for years - hundreds or even thousands of years. New doctrines are not pulled out of thin air and old doctrines are not contradicted or replaced by new. My point is that your comparison of how the LDS prophets operate with how the office of the papacy works is worthless because the two have little to nothing in common.

“priesthood restrictions” means that blacks were denied “priesthood” because of their color. Until. of course, a “revelation” made it all OK. That, and accusations of racism.

Joseph’s successors would be successive prophets, and I stand by my statement. You persist in ignoring Limbo, or any of the examples I brought up.

ibkc;4649285:
My point exactly. Ol’ Joe (and his successors) claimed to hear the voice of God and preached and wrote down what they claimed to hear. Were they just speculating? Or were they intending to pass the “word of God” on to their followers? And who decides what is “canonized” or not. If JS was on a drunk and began to prophesy, was that “canon” or not? One wonders.
Yep, good ol’ joe. He invented a religion, right? And he was an evil guy right?, usually on a ‘drunk’, right? And yet, I would take mormon neighbors any day of the week. They are just nice as heck and if I ever needed help, I would know that these neighbors would be there for me. Good ol’ drunken Joe must have done somethin’ right, right? 🙂
