so for my new ap english class one of the books we could ave read for the summer reading list was “my sister’s keeper”… and i just want to know if its morally offensive to catholics. i think i read that one of the sisters was made by invitro fertilization.
I haven’t read the book, but I know this much.
There is a girl (Kate) who, at the age of 2, is diagnosed with some illness; the parents decide to have another child (Anna) genetically engineered (via
in invitro fertilization) to match the first child so that Anna can be a donor for Kate. Originally, only blood from the umbilical cord was needed, but as time goes on Anna is needed more and more to keep Kate alive.
The book (as far as I can tell) is about the
problems that arise from this process, because Anna is
her own person, not simply the property of her parents or the organ-factory of her sister. Anna goes to seek legal counsel so that she isn’t treated as such.
The book might contain subject matter that Catholics take offense to, but I don’t think the book itself is offensive; that is, I don’t think the book glorifies IVF or organ-factories, etc.
