I don’t know if many of you remember me, but I used to post here quite a bit. Well, I took some time off CAF to try a Protestant discussion board, and let me tell you, PRAISE GOD I am back!

I feel that my little sojourn was fruitful in some way, but for the most part I feel it dragged me down like I never thought possible.

Let me thank the moderators of this board for their fairness and understanding (even of those who may not deserve it). My experience at the other board has taught me just how blessed we are with this wonderful place on the Internet.

Here one will not experience hateful rants or personal attacks. This board is definitely a rare jewel in the crown of Internet forums.

Glad to be home. I missed many of you.

Just visit the Roman Catholicism board on CARM to see what this poster is talking about, it’s tough. (I hope it deosn’t start a board war).

I think this boards charity to one another is superb. There is the occasional bad moment which I am guilty of too, but not an everyday occurence, the people are just much more respectful of each other here than other Christian boards…

That place is pure poison, just a horrible experience. I am giving that place up for Lent, the constant attacks, falsehoods, and patronizing. I couldn’t take it anymore.

Well God bless I’ll dip out before we have a board war on our hands.

So how does a “board war” work? Never heard of it.

How can we better handle places like that? I mean, is there any way to make a difference in such a hostile environment?

Father TP said to try and post positive messages, specifically about saints and our prayer traditions. I tried that one on St Francis, and it got some very nice responses and also some very angry ones. He also said to be proactive and not just repsond to accusations against Catholic doctrine, but rather point out the Church’s teachings.

Maybe in time being positive and pro-active would make some inroads.

With regards to leaving them altogether, I worry about the lurkers who are seeking information. I was contacted by a couple of them who were very grateful for advice and support. If we all just left non-catholic boards some people who would be open to hearing a Catholic voice may miss the oppurtunity.

When I post on that site I stay kind and show patience and try to never let my frustration get the best of me, I try to keep the posts short and concise and incredibly accurate. Typically if you look the Catholics come off very patient and kind, and the “Evangelical Christians” I put that in quotes because I know many Evangelicals who are very kind, and real salt of the Earth people. The people on that board are not, they’re like a pack of rabid hyenas’. They’re sanctinmonious, patronizing and downright nasty.

I think when most people read the posts no matter what denomination they are they come away with a similar feeling.

I’m out of there for Lent, I want to focus on getting closer to God, and what transpires on that board really eats away at me little by little.

Maybe I’ll revisit the place after Lent, probably not though who needs it. Most of those people are cradle Evangelicals raised to hate the Catholic Church, and to me don’t represent any of what Christians ideals should.

I was really floored after going into those forums, I mean just shocked, and hurt by the accusations I heard. Everything from we worship Satan, to our women are loose, and Catholics have abortions much more than anyone else, I mean everything you could think of. I guess I was naive living in a heavy Catholic area, I had no idea people hated us so much. I even spent a lot of time in different denominations and Churches and I was never really exposed to it.
 
You piqued my interest, I had to go look, but just reading the warning about the various groups that post there made me want to avoid it.

I have evangelical friends. One of them is so legalistic and anti-catholic that the friendship has cooled considerably. Another has been polite and understanding as I return here to the church of my youth. Deep down I think they realize that the RCC is right and they can’t bring themselves to think that. Can’t go there. It’s harder being a Catholic than it is being a Protestant (non-catholic). Lent means a great deal to us, but my friends won’t be doing anything except planning for Easter dinner. Very sad.

Welcome back.

I think it takes a particular calling to be able to put up with the atmosphere over on the other board. I find that I enjoy it over there a lot of the time, but this is probably because of an unholy liking of a good argument and of poking holes in other people’s balloons.

I am also giving up posting on that board for Lent, although I intend to lurk there and PM any sincere enquirers.

Dennis…you have a thicker skin and lower blood pressure than I do that is for sure.

…I just looked at the CARM sites definition of “Roman Catholicism”…it made me puke in my mouth!

Welcome home from war…I’m glad someone could do it…It’s not for me…I would become to angry and it would affect my life… 😦
 
I spent some time in a non-denominational Bible study and almost lost my faith in God to the point of being an athiest. Welcome back.

No way! I lurked at that board for awhile, and virtually every time I saw a post that I wanted to respond to, you had already posted what I was going to say and more. I was really impressed with what you had to say, and with your patience.
 
Im trying to take a break from all forum posting this season.

The problem with CAF is that I get hooked and sometimes spend way to long on here:D I cant help it

Welcome back! I remember you! 😃 I really think the Catholic who go to non-Catholic sites do make a difference. Last summer I participated on a KJV Bible Only board for ex-Catholics. I thought it was a parody at first; the foul language and insults were too much to be believed. I ended up getting banned for posting quotes from the Early Church Fathers on Transubstantiation.

Well, I checked in recently and the tone has changed considerably. There were several dedicated Catholics who ignored the taunts and personal attacks to correct misrepresentations of what the Church teaches and their patience paid off. The ex-Catholics there are still against the Church but in a very toned-down way.

So, I really believe that Catholics on these boards are really making a difference even when it seems hopeless. I’m sure you made a difference for at least one person over at CARM, Dennis!!! Even getting one person to reconsider their understanding of Catholicism is worth it. :clapping:
