My son defends the use and legalization of marijuana. he says it is less harmful than the common snuff and better than alcohol.
Please help me with this:confused:

Well, very basic science agrees with him. Every scientific study acknowledges this as well. It is much less harmful than alcohol. All things in moderation. If it is the legality that bothers you, you have a point. But legalization is happening. Alcohol was illegal once, as you know.

Marijuana is less harmful then alcohol but that doesn’t make it harmless. There are plenty of studies out there that show Marijuana stunts your intellect.
How many people who are addicted to Marijuana have any drive or motivation in life? How many of them would like nothing more then to sit on a couch and eat junk food while listening to music or watching movies?
I know plenty of people who are dependent on Marijuana and haven’t done anything worthwhile in their lives. They haven’t changed much since they’ve started smoking it at the age of 15. That’s a huge problem.

BTW. Alcohol was never illegal to consume. It was only illegal to manufacture and sell. Marijuana has always been illegal to sell and possess. It’s also always been illegal to possess marijuana paraphinellia.

Your son is not technically incorrect. I don’t really smoke myself, but I know a lot of very successful people who occasionally indulge. They don’t make a big deal out of it, and most people wouldn’t even know.

exactly. I am not saying “EVERYBODY GET STONED NOW!” but let’s be intelligent adults. I have several friends who are doing very well in life and career wise who don’t just sit at home and do nothing…but yes, they do smoke pot. being a lazy bum and being a smoker of pot are different. they sometimes coincide. correlation doesn’t establish causation.

In my younger years I used to smoke. Now, I don’t. I don’t even miss it and I actually enjoy being sober! With that being said, it’s still less harmful than drinking. I’ve never even heard about anyone smoking so much marijuana in one sitting that they overdosed. Maybe on cheetos, though. But plenty of college age students end up in the ER either dead or dying from alcohol poisoning.

Do I want anyone smoking weed and driving? NO! I don’t think it will become legal in a federal sense until the police have an accurate way of measuring someone’s marijuana intake in the last several hours. (through breathalyzer or some other way). Daily smoking is a waste, though. Physically, it won’t kill you and a lot of people get around lung problems by smoking through vaporizing or cooking with it. But… it really does slow down the brain. It really does lead to a lack of ambition with daily smoking. Moderation is the key. One person may be able to smoke it weekly or more and lead productive lives. Others… not so much. It all depends on what their priorities are in life.

CORRELATION DOES NOT ESTABLISH CAUSATION.

quote of the day.

I’m not sure where everyone’s getting their ideas that it’s less harmful from. Actual scientific journals such as Chemical Research in Toxicology show it’s much worse than tobacco:
pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10.1021/tx700275p
That would mean it’s certainly worse than alchohol.

Where on earth in that study did you get that they came to that conclusion? Nobody is comparing marijuana use with tobacco. Both are bad for the lungs. That is widely known. That is why many marijuana smokers use vaporizers or cook with it so they don’t get that stuff into their lungs. But YOU made the leap to alcohol… how? Any drug that you can OD on in one day or nights usage is deadly. Yes, you can drink yourself to death in one night. Same with cocaine, heroine, oxycontin, etc. But no, you cannot ingest so much marijuana that you OD. It has never happened. Ever. Not a single case study. Not a single person in the ER. Not a single person. Let’s face it, it’s one of the lesser evils out there. Do I condone it? That depends. Do I think it has therapeutic value? Again… depends on the person and their illness. But let’s be real here. Saying that it’s worse for your lungs than tobacco and therefore must be worse than alcohol is a strawman argument. It lacks serious logic.

Legal or not, isn’t “bud” use a mortal sin?
I don’t know what the official view is on whether it is a mortal sin or not. Personally, for me, I would say yes. Taking, smoking, or drinking something to deliberately make me high or drunk, etc. is essentially me taking away my human reasoning, deductions, common sense… my humanity. It would take my thoughts and actions further away from God on purpose. I have no problem with a beer now and again, but if I were to drink to intoxication, I would wake up in the morning feeling like I had a mortal sin on my shoulders… it’s the deliberate choice to do so that would make me feel like that.

It’s as harmful as anything else and depending on the person can be better than alcohol. As for addictiveness, the worst are caffeine and nicotine.

Anything the clouds the mind is wrong (sin) That is what my priest told a young man that walked up and asked him. I think That we should not legalize it and increase the punishment for being caught with it but thats my 2 cents.

Is your son an adult or teenager? I tell my kids that pot smokers are losers and to be avoided. Some day they might want a job that requires a security clearance and they will have to disclose all drug use. Time spent getting high is so wasteful, selfish, almost like masturbation. Ifs they want to relax, play chess, take a hike in a beautiful place, etc. culturally there is a difference between smoking weed and having a glass of wine during dinner or a cocktail in the evening.

Many teenagers think sex and drugs are cool, in reality it’s selfishness, but don’t tell that to the free love of the 60s.

“I tell my kids that pot smokers are losers and to be avoided.”

Medical users are not sinning. Neither should they be (but probably currently are) denied security clearance.

High school kids smoking weed in rare instances have valid reasons for medical marijuana. I would not want my kids to judge them. That is more dangerous than the weed. Please reconsider telling your children that anyone smoking it is a “loser”. Telling them to avoid it is one thing - telling them to judge others is another.

I don’t have a problem with it at all I think it is a great thing. If I was in that much pain I would want an option other than the painkillers - whether I am in high school or not. Whether or not medical marijuana has been approved in my state or not as well… No one follows the law to the letter their whole life for a reason. I think speeding is more dangerous than marijuana.

Actually Marijuana hasn’t always been illegal to sell, possess or even to be consumed in the U.S…
“Regulations and restrictions on the sale of Cannabis sativa as a drug began as early as 1860. Increased restrictions and labeling of cannabis as a poison began in many states from 1906 onward, and outright prohibitions began in the 1920s.” en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_history_of_cannabis_in_the_United_States

I smoke occasionally and I’m definitely not a loser. I’ve earned two bachelor’s degrees, am currently in law school, and moved up very quickly in my previous career that I gave up for law school.

So many of my classmates in high school smoked so much weed, wasting precious moments being stoned and thinking they were cool. I say judge them, tell them they are losers and turn their life around.

Fat kids should also be judged, how else will they realize they are on a fast track to diabetes?

I’m not talking about cruelty, I talking about helping them have a better life.

I don’t want my kids hanging out with stoners. Stoners are in a state of deceit. Many pot smokers will try other drugs to get high, not like having beers while playing pool or tasting a fine wine.

Legalization will only create more stoners earlier in life with less stigma.
