He was the only one of our four who had not divorced, and he filed last week. She has spent tens of thousands of dollars and will not stop or get help. The thing is, I have come to love his wife myself. I can see that if she would get help this situation could be resolved, but she won’t. I care for her, and her parents are good people.
Anxiety is flowing because I know that these relationships will be lost for good. Almost no one else in our family is divorced, but each of mine are or will be, and they are the ones who were raised Catholic, even though it seems to have had much less effect than I had hoped. In fact, this last one has become an atheist.
I am rambling, but needed to say this somewhere.😦

If your daughter in law refuses to get help, then your son has only 2 choices, divorce or bankruptcy. Hopefully, filing got her attention and she will seek the counseling she needs.

I am sorry that this has happened to you and your children. It is hard for even Catholics to fight the forces all around us that advocate for divorce. I would be praying that your son returns to the Church sooner than later…Is his wife Catholic? What a shame that she won’t seek help.

Bankruptcy won’t help because it’s a one-time event, and any debt incurred after filing is going to be collectible. You have to stop spending money you don’t have, or nothing will help long-term.

Are there children? I sure hope not.

I’m sorry you’re facing this, katy. :hug1: Pray for everybody, yourself included. And never lose hope for the future.

I had a friend who after the birth of the second child (unfortunately their first son died one week after birth of a major heart malformation) discovered that his wife had run them into debt. She actually had to be hospitalized for her depression, which was the origin of her need to spend continuously – she could not get “enough”.

I would pray that your son puts his divorce on hold, separates from her so that she may take this as a sign that she needs help and works toward healing her of this compulsion. For some, maybe for her, this will be the wake-up call she needs to see that her need is based on some other “lack” and this need to buy things is only a symptom of the problem. I pray that it is so.

Pray that God softens your son’s heart, and finds another way to heal his wife without the necessity of divorce.

God Bless.

Thanks everyone, for the prayers and suggestions. I understand my son’s situation, but still, not having her around will be like having a death without a body or a funeral–just a hole in the family. At this point I don’t know if my son is receptive to anything, but I will look for an opportunity to ask.
