Like in so many different things, it depends.
In my case, I sought out a Deacon in my parish. We’ve known each other for several years through myself volunteering with the youth group and doing music at Mass. As a married man involved in different ministries, I felt as if he could help me in those areas he has much more experience in balancing those things than I did. In addition to the usual spiritual aspects, of course. His spirituality is much like my own, which also helps. He’s very much a mentor of mine, I value and cherish the role he has in my life.
Meanwhile, come May 2018 I’ll be finished a three year program to become a spiritual director within my diocese. A part of this will be the diocese may refer people to me, however God has some ideas sometimes and perhaps there will be some who may ask me themselves.
The key for this is prayer. My director made that clear when he first said “lets pray about this and discern God’s Will” before we first met. Regardless of whom you find, I encourage you to pray for God’s Will in this area.
