Although I’m a cradle Catholic, I only really began to have a faith about four years ago. Since then a lot has happened. I struggled with many sins, masturbation being one of them. In about two years I broke it as an addiction. In the past two years, I can only recall falling to this sin once.

I’ve made a lot of progress, but recently satan has been trying something new. You see, I’ve come to the point now, where (most) whenever I’m tempted I have the ability to walk away freely, and the desire. I can walk away without a major struggle. The new thing satan is trying, the new lie…is that in the depths of my heart I don’t really want to be holy, I want to enjoy sin.

The hook of this is, its partially true. I want to enjoy the pleasures of this life, I will not deny that I do. God created these pleasures for us, but at this point in my life it can seem more a curse then a blessing. The partial truth is what satan says, but the whole truth is ‘I want to enjoy the pleasures of this life, but not at the expense of a life with Christ’

The catch on the ‘not wanting to be holy’ side is twofold. First I get an image of a super pious person who spends all day in prayer and meditation…not quite my cup of tea. I don’t want to be sitting in a cave worshiping all day, I don’t think that’s what I was created to do. Now I know the lie of this is that there is more then one way to be holy, there is more then one way to follow Christ. But the attack does stick at times.

The other side of the ‘not wanting to be holy’ lie, is that in order to live life for Christ I must deny myself some of the pleasures it has to offer. This part, is true. And it probably is the most effective half-truth satan uses at this point in time. As I said before I feel that sexuality was created and has a beauty of its own. But I am to be denied it all for now. And I catch myself wondering ‘is this what I really want?’. And that is when I come dangerously close to falling into sin again.

I know this is all a ruse. I can see right through it all. But the catch is that satan does not just lie, if that were so it would be much easier to reject him. But he fills our minds with half-truths. And while we immediately reject the lies, those truths stop us dead in our tracks and make us wonder, if only for a moment, whether we are wrong.

I just read a book entitled ‘Wild at Heart’ by John Eldridge. It is a great book about man recognizing his masculinity for what it is; a gift of God. All my life, since I was maybe ten years old, I have felt a potential within me to do something, and a desire for more then the ordinary. I would die if I were forced to live a life that is dull and meaningless. When I became a teenager I felt a desire to fight. Not the typical passing guy grunting two fisted desire to scrimmage, but I mean a deep desire to the core of my being to fight. For awhile I thought this was a calling to the military, but I know now its not the military, not that kind of fighting I am called to. But to fight against the powers of hell.

But I feel I am given no avenue to fight. How can I fight what I cannot see or hear or touch? When I struggle with sin I feel the only one I’m struggling with is myself. And its true. I struggle with my own desire to sin, not with hell. I feel as though the only things I can do where hell is concerned is fall, or run. Why must I run from a defeated enemy if my ally is the Lord? Why can I not confront the demons that would have my head?

Ah yes, your next thought may be prayer. But words do not satisfy this burn I feel inside. It is like a man who is angered to his very soul…and you ask him to sit and talk. Talk…how can I talk? Prayer is not me fighting the enemy, it is me asking God to make them go away.

I feel now two passions most distressing. First the call to sin, the half-truths that nag at me. And then the feeling that I cannot fulfill my purpose. We all have purposes, callings, vocations. I feel, and fear, that I cannot find a way to fulfill mine. I know I should trust God, and I do, I have. But even in trust there is room for despair.

I guess I’ve dragged on a little more then I meant to. I really don’t know what I’m looking for by posting here. Most of my posts asking for help never get posted. Mainly because I know that I won’t find what I’m looking for, not here. I just wish I knew what the hell I am looking for.

Have you ever listened to Father Corapi’s story? I think he shares intimately his struggle with this same kind of question(s).

Anim8,

What occurred to me is that perhaps the “fight” you are looking for is a future apostolate in which you can help other young men who struggle with the same temptations. trueknights.org/ may be a good place to start to get ideas.

You are engaged in spiritual combat, and that’s no small matter — you are fighting against the armies of Satan. To follow up on LSK’s (previous poster’s) suggestion about Father Corapi, I recently heard a talk by Father Corapi in which he calls the Rosary his weapon and the Brown Scapular his uniform (identifying him as a member of Our Lady’s army). Padre Pio, too, called the Rosary his weapon.

God bless you in your struggle. It’s not easy, but it sounds like you are making a valiant effort.

You write well and express your thoughts clear. What you said was very true.
Satan is no dummy. If he simply throws in obvious lies, most people won’t be fooled.
The cunning part is, like you said, he throws in half truth half lie, or even majority of truth mixed with some lies to confuse us. But you are smart; you have seen through his tactics, you are not confused. Your struggle is to stick to the truth you know and not waver.

Yes, there are pleasures in life we want to enjoy. God wants us to enjoy life, but not at the cost of sin. We can enjoy different pleasures and still be holy. Sex is good. But we are supposed to enjoy it only in the boundary God set for us, that is in the holy matrimony of marriage. You are only 19. When you meet the one you love and get married, you will enjoy sex within the right boundary.

We don’t have to sit in a cave and pray whole day.
Following the examples of Brother Lawrence and Little Flower, we can enjoy the presence of God and sanctify all things we do along the way of our daily routines.

You know deep down you want to be holy. To be holy does not mean to be miserable.
The joy of the Lord is our strength. We can cheerfully give ourselves to God and strive for holiness. Yes, there are struggles and tears on the way to holiness. But even the tears, shed for the striving of holiness, are sweet.

I applaud your determination of fight for holiness. I agree with other posters about Fr. Corapi and Rosary. Even you don’t think the idea of prayer will buy you anything at this moment, I still want to remind you the power of prayer, especially the power of Rosary. If you are not praying Rosary daily, I highly recommend you to do so. Daily Rosary makes difference. Try it and you will be convinced.

Hi Anim8…you say you want to be holy. It also sounded like you kind of viewed prayer as a less-than-attractive proposition to you now. Maybe you see it as too passive…

But - you will never become holy through your own efforts. God is the only one who can make you holy - and only if you submit - surrender to Him. Don’t worry…He will put you to good use and in His time.

The important thing is that you will never be holy without prayer and without letting The Potter mold the clay. Give up your need to ‘be’, to control things, to do it all yourself. God speaks with a still, small voice - listen to Him.

Find some Eucharistic Adoration if you can and sit before Him - humble - and ask Him to make you holy.

(then you’ll be back on here complaining about all the battles you’ve been given to wage…👍 🙂 )

I like Peter Kreft’s take on evil and Hell.

Here is the appetizer on evil:

Follow up with his take on Hell by going to the main page and clicking on Hell

The best way to handle this is to refuse Satan. Read the sermon on the Mount over and over untill you memorize it.

When Satan is whispering his half truths, coating them with honey and hoping you will accept his tempting lures and snare, strike back!
No pussyfooting around and be all business!

You must refuse him Loudly and Proudly.

The means you use to go about that are up to your personal spirituality.

I have my ways that may not be your cup of tea. Fight? Yes. Not the way you may be thinking. The most deadly blow you can deliver to Satan is to refuse him and stand by Jesus Christ.

Reccomendations that I can share with you:

Frequent Confession & Reception of the Eucharist
Frequent Prayer (prayers to Our Lady are very powerful for this)
Stop FEARING satan and start FEARING the Lord.👍

Hell is my favorite topic btw. I am glad you believe in it, I came here thinking you did not believe in it. It is REAL.

Prayer is the most powerful weapon we have, especially the Rosary. Your Mother wears combat boots! We are part of Mary’s army.

If you think you can fight the enemy without God’s help, you are deceived. You are correct in saying that “prayer is not me fighting the enemy.” In prayer, we acknowledge that only God can conquer, and we place ourselves at His service.

Prayer is not just words. It is also a complete attitude of dependence on God for everything, knowing that without Him we can do nothing, but that “I can do all things in Him who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)

:rotfl: 👍

Can I steal that sometime? Its GOOD!😉

Ug. Reading too much John Eldridge might be part of your problem. 😉 I’ve found, from the three Eldridge books I’ve read (although “Wild At Heart” was not one of them) that he tends to overemphasize personal glory, adventure, and excitement and underemphasize the importance of organized religion. His outlook on the spiritual is that if you’re not enjoying some sort of “Lord of the Rings”-type adventure, you’re denying yourself your full potential.

This becomes at perfect weakness for the enemy to attack you. By thinking that prayer isn’t “active” enough, that it’s asking God to do all the protecting, while you just sit there and deny your masculinity is like going into battle without your sword because you don’t want IT to do the killing for you- you’d rather use your bare hands. It’s about humility. God wants to work through us. We need to cultivate the humility to realize that we are vessels for God’s will- not masters of it.

From personal experience, I would suggest less Eldridge and more lives of the saints- what about St. Gabriel Possenti? What about St. George? What about St. Michael? I’d suggest reading as much as you can about some truly masculine saints, and see how they did it.
God bless,
Cari
