I have not been active on this site for a while and came here just to see how things were going with you. This twist was a surprise.

I am in a separation that has lasted almost 2 1/2 years.

The main issue I have faced in a very active parish and me being active as well as my soon to be Ex . I hear many say they will pray for us… that is great but I wonder how many marriages could be saved it close friends actually got involved. Just sharing the actual Church teaching and Canon Law would help. Divorce is a Grave Matter (term used for mortal sin in the Catechism). Even if you are in an abusive situation separation is only until the problem is resolved by counseling or some other process. Reconciliation is expected in all but the rarest of cases. Separation is to be approved by Clergy.

Here is a link everyone should read this because it is ignored… intratext.com/IXT/ENG0017/_P44.HTM

Can. 1153 §1 A spouse who occasions grave danger of soul or body to the other or to the children, or otherwise makes the common life unduly difficult, provides the other spouse with a reason to leave, either by a decree of the local Ordinary or, if there is danger in delay, even on his or her own authority.

§2 In all cases, when the reason for separation ceases, the common conjugal life is to be restored, unless otherwise provided by ecclesiastical authority.

Here is a site I found very useful on understanding myself and my relationships. Free site from a wonderful counselor who is very wise and gives this site as a gift. alturtle.com

We wonder why divorce is the same with Catholics as others. If we don’t speak up and admonish sinners (Others reading this don’t bother with the don’t judge line. read this… “The Church’s tradition has included ‘admonishing sinners’ among the spiritual works of mercy. It is important to recover this dimension of Christian charity. We must not remain silent before evil.

“I am thinking of all those Christians who, out of human regard or purely personal convenience, adapt to the prevailing mentality, rather than warning their brothers and sisters against ways of thinking and acting that are contrary to the truth and that do not follow the path of goodness.

“Christian admonishment, for its part, is never motivated by a spirit of accusation or recrimination. It is always moved by love and mercy, and springs from genuine concern for the good of the other.”

Pope Benedict XVI for Lent 2012

We have failed to love our brothers and sisters. It could cost them their eternal life. If you are separated and want to receive forgiveness, you then must be truly sorry . You are not forgiven if you don’t truly repent. Repentance would include attempting reconciliation.

So, If you have come back to the faith and are attending Mass regularly and receiving the Sacraments you will be granted grace to help you endure. Reread last Sunday’s Gospel and you will see what Jesus was talking about. It is a tough teaching… many left…

The Apostles even said, upon hearing Jesus talk about marriage, that it would be better if they had never married. Jesus was tough. If you want to hear the best talk I have heard (except for the last part when Andy Stanley starts inventing things to make his followers feel better…)

it is here. northpoint.org/messages/shocking-statements-of-jesus/a-shocking-reversal/ NUMBER 5

I have NEVER heard this teaching anywhere near this clear from our pulpit. My pastor refused to even talk to my wife for 6 months… he was not going to hunt her down… He didn’t care… he wants to be loved… He could have saved our marriage by sharing Catholic teaching with her. He chose not to.

For a guy, respect is the number one thing needed from a woman. Sex is a close second. Unfortunately God made us so Men “need” sex to feel close to a Woman and Woman need to feel close to desire sex. Someone has to give in. Never let you mother get between you and your husband. You can stop that right now. It will take about 6 months of your new behavior for him (or you - for his changes) to notice and another 6 months for him to believe them. I am guessing your mom didn’t come along on your dates with him. He never expected you would put her above him. He is hurt. He doesn’t feel safe enough to tell you (guys are trained to “suck it up”) that now. Maybe you can become the woman you were when you were dating again. Pretend it is the way you want it and EXPECT nothing in return (though, it will start to happen little by little.) You can only clean up your side of the street. What you think HE should do doesn’t matter, ever… ever.

The quickest way to show him you are loving him, like Christ loved the Church, is when the next issue comes up that he and your mother disagree on, take his side and literally stand by him, hold his hand… You are one flesh… You were to leave you Mother and cleave to him. That has not happened but it can. It is up to you and you alone. You have a tough choice to make. As with all things Catholic, obedience is the key here. If you follow God and don’t do what Adam and Eve did - doubted God… you will be rewarded. Is that a good marriage? No telling. Will you be happy? Who knows? Keep one thing in mind. Jesus doesn’t say much about happiness here on earth. He does grant peace… all the time. Happiness is what awaits some of us (Hopefully me someday… I need some time to get there.) in eternity. Too often we want to do it our way, not God’s. There is a God… and he thinks just like me, as Dr. Ray says.

In the classic “The Great Divorce”, C. S. Lewis states:

“There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, ‘Thy will be done,’ and those to whom God says, in the end, ‘thy will be done’.”

It is our choice and ours alone. Peace be with you!

Hydin, thank you for your post, you always take so much time and care in responding and I appreciate that so much.
What you posted really made an impression on me - and I thought I’d post a quick update.

We continued going to therapy weekly, and really made some strides towards fixing our issues.
I also started doing a lot of “self-work” - there’s a blog I follow and though she’s not Catholic, she really speaks me to me. peacefulwife.com
I personally believe in complementarianism, and having the Husband lead the home, that being said I have a very controlling nature.
Our marriage came to the point where I literally just broke - I felt like I couldn’t possibly do any more or try any harder.
After a lot of prayer and reading, I realized by biggest enemy is that I could not trust my husband.
I controlled him - I expected a marriage that wasn’t possible, my marriage wasn’t perfect, it never would be, and that was a truth I just could NOT accept.
Because my husband wasn’t doing things exactly as I thought he should, I would feel like it was a betrayal.
And because of this controlling behavior, he began pulling away. In my mind, if I didn’t control and smother, and nag he would abandon me; which is of course, the complete opposite of what I should have been doing.

So I broke - I let go of my vision for what my marriage should look like and let go of my husband, and gave him room to breathe and be the man that God intended him to be.
I started recognizing and biting back critical or mean words, kept myself silent while I was learning how to filter myself and really started to actively support him and his decisions.

I’ve only really been working on this for maybe 2 months, but already I see such a difference - our intimacy issues are far from over, and we still are getting couples counselling every other week, but our home life and relationship has done a lot of growing…

There’s more I’d like to say, but I’ll have to come back later! Its naptime for the little one…

Peace,

Great news. Hoping things continue to improve. Sometimes it is driven by attitude more than we like to admit. Working on yourself is time well spent. I love the Alturtle.com website. He provides tons of free stuff that is amazing. If you pay the 3 bucks for a mp3 then you will hear his voice as you read the free stuff. He has the ability to present things in a way that they are easy to accept. He only deals with the reader… Example… are you a controller? sure you are (we all are in some areas…) or everyone makes sense all the time (to themselves… the only person who really matters…). wise man.

I am now divorced and made it through the holiday. Still praying for reconciliation and have not given up but I am letting God handle it. My trying to help has not been to my benefit. heck, it may not be His will. Your will be done is always in my prayers… along with I sure hope we agree on this one though.

God is good. He is really good. I had a God moment tonight. Sitting in Mass the day after the last kid went back to college and my daughter moved out of state I was dragging. Feeling sorry for myself. 10 minutes into Mass one of my former students walks by (she is never late for Mass and never passes where I sit…) I didn’t see her until she bent down and gave me a big hug. I was reminded that I am loved and pretty lucky to have the life I have. I keep forgetting that.

I pray that your marriage will become a happy one. 80% of couples that fight through the tough times overwhelmingly report happy marriages 5 years later. Those who divorce are not anywhere near that level. Most regret the divorce, even if remarried.

Another Al quote… it takes the other party 6 months to notice a change and another 6 months to be convinced it is real and permanent. I think he is correct on that one.

One thing I am struggling with (struggle is a great word to use with your husband… the listener defines it… If he wants it to be major it is… for you it may not be. Another line is "it makes sense that you feel that way… " They hear… I agree with you.

To the struggle… I am very frustrated that the church seems to back away from calling divorce what it is… unless it meets certain criteria according to canon law and the Catechism, separation and divorce is a mortal sin… Grave Matter… I can’t get clarification on that. Catholic divorce websites say it isn’t… but it must be. Catechism uses the term innocent party to say they can take the Sacrament. The other party must not be able to do that…it is something I keep thinking needs to be said to my exwife but I don’t think it would be supported by our priest. Tonight at Mass the pastor praised the catholic counselor who told my exwife that divorce was OK.

I will try to check in more often…

I hope you read this.
Here is what happened to me. There is so much to tell you. First of all if you can contact
S-Anon.org, it took me a year to find them. Please just get in contact with someone there and tell your story. Your eyes will be opened. The reason I know it is what it is because I lived it and nobody can tell you what you need to know unless they have gone through it.
If you are skeptical it is an international program that leads many people to the catholic faith. But if offers hope and superior needed help for those who have been hurt by another s sexual behavior. It is the reaction that your wife had to your simple inquiry to the text. What he did is called redirection or deflection, and she acted like a child who just got caught stealing. That kind of behavior shows an explicit type of behavior that can be found in a person who is emotionally immature, definitely perfectly educated but acting like a 10 year old emotionally.
You will find the answers you are looking for. I am catholic and am in the Deaconate program and boy do I have a whopper of a story to tell to you. You can email me at detroitsanon@gmail.com or anyone else who thinks they need help. I know I have been vague but the brain plays tricks on you in the state you may be in. I know you will research what I said and will get back to me only on your terms. This is only a suggestion
