I’m starting this post to talk about what my thoughts have been over the past few weeks for people to read, think about, and maybe even reply if they have something to say.
Recently I’ve had doubts about my faith. I was (and still am being) raised Roman Catholic and I didn’t even have a shadow of a doubt that a God existed. Besides meals, I almost never prayed or thought about God. What was the point? I wasn’t even a teenager yet and my logic was that I would become religious when I was an adult. But then lately I’ve been getting doubts and religious questions. Serious ones. I want to clarify right now that there’s nothing I’d like more than for a God that loves everyone to exist, that will take care of us for eternity if we live according to his wishes.
And then there’s eternity. Whenever I think seriously about Heaven I feel like I’m getting a panic attack, because I can’t comprehend that long. It just seems so profoundly wrong, that there’s a place where nothing dies. But at the same time, eternal death scares me too. That once we die there’s nothing afterwards. What happens after death is a very difficult thing for me to think about. It just feels like everything has an end, and the fact that if God doesn’t exist at one point I won’t see any of my loved ones ever again scares me. And if God doesn’t exist, my wishing He does won’t change anything. Living a long and pure life won’t mean anything different than if I jumped off a bridge (I’m not suicidal, just pointing out that without a God, the endings would be the same). And that’s probably the main reason why I’m writing this. Since nothing I do will change eternity in the end, I’m looking for evidence that without a doubt God exists.
And I’m seeing things like movies where robots are considered living, such as Chappie or Ex Machina. AI’s don’t think. They aren’t alive. The way they react to things is only determined by a computer. They can’t think for themselves. They might be programmed in a way that makes them respond in a way that humans do, but they can’t have original thoughts. If someone dies and you make a robot that looks and talks like them, that robot is not a person. Wishing so won’t make it so. Why is society so blind?
And because of all the questions going through my head, I live in an almost constant state of depression. And the thought that everything might be fake is a very terrifying thought for me. I know that it’s very unlikely, and an almost absurd thought, but it sticks with me. The fact that we might be a bunch of brains in vats and that everyone I know and love is only a figment of my imagination. Speaking of imaginations, mine is extremely vivid. It was a good thing in, maybe, 5th grade creative writing, but it’s the main reason that I was afraid of the dark until almost 13. I still slightly am. Some people get nightmares from things they watched on TV. I got nightmares from my thoughts of dark many eyed, tentacled abominations that haunted the shadows in my room (only an example, I thought up hundreds of varying creatures). But even doing something I like, my imagination just thinks up questions without me even trying to.
And I know that this isn’t even talking about religion anymore. But to me personally it is. It means that everything is worth it, because I’ll get to spend eternity with my family, my friends, and most importantly with out Lord and Savior. I don’t know. At this point I’m just talking about things going through my head.
Some people like watching TV or reading books because of entertainment. I just like it because it takes my mind off of reality. Thank you for reading this.

In my experience, having many questions and doubts can actually help one strengthen their faith if they look into it and answer them according to the teachings of the Church. We really can’t know with 100% certainty that there is a God; however, we can use reason and see that there must be a God. If we could know with absolute certainty, then we wouldn’t have faith.

I have thought about everything being a delusion as well. I eventually dismissed it because I had no proof at all that it was true.

Why give your 100% to a God you don’t even fully know exists?

Every human goes through stages in their life, it is called “growing up” and we tend to change out attitudes toward life in general. I will tell you a little about my journey:

I read the Bible from end to end, when I was young teenager. Some parts entertained me, others baffled and yet some others passed right above my head.
Could not understand them.
I was raised Catholic, but alas as many other Catholics experienced all over the world. We were poorly cathechized.
As a consequence I rejected many a teaching of Holy Mother Church, mostly out of ignorance. And I had read the Bible! That must mean something!

I had some conversations with protestants when I was a teenager, they tried to convert me, to their “camp”, but failed, when they quoted verses, I was somehow able to rebuke them.
Which was kind of weird, because I had not, really memorized them.
Somehow even though of my rebellion, on some of the teachings, I KNEW that the true Church was the Catholic one. Go figure.
Years later I visited the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico city while on a business trip and stuff started to happen to me, as the result of which I experienced a true conversion of heart.
I have no doubt that the Virgin yanked me out of the road of perdition to which I was certainly going.
And I considered myself a good guy, but in reality I was a “Cafeteria Catholic”, I now know this.
I can tell you, that the stuff that happened to me, you would probably call “coincidence”, except that it was not, a single event that did it, rather it was a whole sequence spanning years.
GOD gave to me, no that is not right, HE orchestrated for me what I needed so that I could fully become one of HIS followers.
Catholic Answers helped me a lot, by reading other’s stories and sharing some of mine I hope to have become a better human and a better Catholic, GOD knows I still need a lot of praying to try and mend what I did and failed to do.
Believe me, that is, what scares me the most. My omissions scare me more than the “sins” I actually committed.
I cannot recommend highly enough: to pray the rosary, attend mass, really paying attention to what is going there. The greatest miracle ever performed by Jesus.
HE IS really there, believe me HE is!
Ask our Mother in Heaven to help us find her son Jesus, she will not fail you.

A poster made the remark that doubts can strengthen ones faith and that we can’t be 100% sure that there is a God.

Why live for God if you’re not even sure He exists?? Then what is the meaning of faith?

Read Hebrews 11:1:

“Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the assurance of things not seen.”

It goes on to speak of how persons in the Old Testament did things by faith; like Abraham and Moses. I would say that they were SURE that God existed.

Now, I understand all of your post (for the OP) but I don’t understand the part about robots.
I’m a science fiction enthusiast myself but let’s not get carried away by watching too many Matrix movies!

One of my priest friends said that if you’re searching for God, you’ve already found Him.
He is apparently revealing Himself to you - just continue your journey.

The only thing I’d like to say is that you cannot prove that God exists in a scientific way, but you can prove He exists by the effects he has, as JerryZ has stated regarding his life.

(Read John 3:1-13)

What you can try considering is this:

Who is Jesus?
Did He really die on the cross?
Why?
Is the resurrection true?

Can I base my life and beliefs on the “man” Jesus? (clearly He is God).

May God bless you on your journey

All I can say is, God says in His word:
“Be STILL and know that I am God”

And:“Don’t be wise in your OWN eyes
fear THE LORD, and turn away from
evil, it will be healing to your body and
refreshment to your bones” Prov. 3:7-8

Don’t let PRIDE harden your heart and
so that you DENY God’s love for the
Church in sending His Son to redeem
her, WE are the reason He became
incarnate of the Virgin Mary!

It’s not all about YOU, we can KNOW
God’s existence and love only in our
relationships with our bros. and sisters
in the faith, yes, His Body, of whom
we are a part!!

That is the MYSTERY of God, the greatest
of which is His LOVE, that is as strong as
death and as severe as hell, that is uncond-
itional, eternal and infinite so that it is only
TOGETHER with ALL the host of believers
THAT EVER LIVED, we can fathom God’s
Love!!! See Eph. 3:18

In other words, “Shut up and be humble.”

(I know you didn’t express it nearly that harshly.)

That just isn’t very helpful though.

OP, I feel your pain. I’ve been there, within a notch of becoming an atheist. All I can say is, if we can wait long enough, patience will be rewarded.

The most important thing is to follow your conscience. Think to yourself always: What does God require of me? God is goodness itself. The only thing to fear is sin. Ask yourself: Do I love what is good and hate what is evil? You must pray for help from God to keep seeking the truth and to accept the truth when you find it.

Why give your 100% to a God you don’t even fully know exists?
My apologies, what I meant to say is that we can’t prove that God exists, but we can know that He does. You would give yourself to Him because you would know without a doubt that He does exist because through His grace and reason one can see that there must be a God.

Lord, I pray for PonderingJak that
he will know that you are super ex-
tremely faithful, and that the power of
your anger and your fury are great as
the fear that is due You. You are
absolutely worthy of honor and completely
holy and supremely kind in the intention
of your will towards us. That your Love
is as strong as death and your jealousy
as severe as hell. Also that Love is FROM
God, a love that is unconditional, eternal and
infinite!!
Amen.

Perfect. Yes, through reason and our trust in the apostles and the Lord’s resurrection we can know there is a God.

Romans 1:19-20

“Because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made…”

For instance, just through nature alone. The laws of the universe. The grandeur of our earthly beauties, etc.

Oh. And let’s not forget the beginning of everything. Who got it going? The Big Bang? Okay. And where did the gases come from? (what is the original cause?)
Love to ask my catechism kids this! – since the big bang is not taught as a THEORY in school –

God bless you
Fran
