Just an example to demonstrate the potential costs (and you can do much more damage to your budget with lighting fixtures without trying all that hard) not a suggestion of what anyone in particular could or should pay for a table lamp.
Is that the lamp she wants?

check out radio shack and chat with the folks there about how the ipod costs are coming down. maybe just wait a short while and the price will get more affordable.

i still don’t have an ipod.

got lotsa lamps!

It is true, the only way to get response on this forum is to appear to say something controversial. I said " the first 6 years were a struggle, so I took over the finances" you said
good for you, but read what you said. My point was that with all the pressure a woman has these days, if the family finances are bad, the husband should handle them. Anyone can run the finances when there is an abundnace of money, but when there is not it creates stress. This stress should not be passed on to the wife.

This post had nothing to do with how great you and your husband are or how great you are doing financially. It is great that you are happy and make alot of money, we have been on both sides and we definetely like it better now. It had to do with a man not being given permission to buy something from his wife, you cannot help but feel for the man. No one person should be in that much in control.
Sorry that you got all offended with my answer. Please don’t take my answer as sarcasm. But I will tell you something, that in no way does it state in my quote that I make an abundance of money. I think that you misread my quote. Hey but that is ok with me. I just wanted to make the record straight here. 🙂

In answer to the original quote, did you ever think about maybe purchasing the same brand but a Nano? I hear it is a lot cheaper, but does the same thing. Just a suggestion.

May I suggest a cd player that plays mp3s. They sell for about $30-$40. Each cd can hold approx 22 hours of shows (640 megs; 15 megs for each hour). CDs are real cheap. Get a 10 pack of CDRWs and rewrite them when you are finished.

I agree with your content…the woman of the house does set the mood, and if there are financial struggles her mood might become sour and affect the entire family…

BUT…and you knew there’d be a big but here…In my sit. I had to take over. My H is in over his head at work, and several times I found myself rushing to pay the water bill before shut off at 5:00pm

Not all men are great at finances…sometimes it just comes down to which person has the time and inclination

I hope he’s kidding.

Anyone notice that “gerryman” never came back?

Oh and by the way, whats your wife doing running the family finances? I have been married 18 years going on 19. — Its not that she did a lousy job, she was great at it. It was just too much for her to have on her shoulders. Women have too much to worry about already these days without worrying about finances. I think men pass this onto their wives because they are too lazy to do it and then they complain because their wives are always sad. Since I took this away from her, she can focus on our children, me and of course her Catholic Faith.
I have been married for 20 years, and I was also in the Navy on submarines for 20 years. I had no choice but for her to handle the finances. After I retired 4 years ago, she continued to do them. Even though I’m no longer in the Navy, my work life is no less stressful, so having her continue to handle the finances takes a huge burden off my shoulders. It has always worked for us, so why fix something that’s not broke? Something that works for one marriage doesn’t necessarily work for others.

You could always shoot for a used one. That said iPods are nice (quite durable, fast, gosh it kills me to promote an Apple product :banghead: ). My advice: whatever you get, don’t buy any RCA digital media devices. They are cheaper and bigger and got good news reviews, but they are junk.

You know, they have table lamps on eBay too…:yup:

I’m back!! Yes, I was kidding. My wife and I were having the ipod discussion so I posted it to tease her. She’s really very wonderful but money is tight so when I brought up the ipod she brought up the lamp and end table (I didn’t mention the end table part, did I). However, Valentine’s day is coming up. But now if I buy her a lamp and end table she’ll think I’m just after an mp3 player. Whatever would give her that idea 🙂

You mean I upset all these women here and you were just kidding.

My wife allows me to buy things and I felt so sorry for you I went out and bought you one from Best Buy - a shiny brand new 60gb IPOD colour video - with all the accessories including a monogrammed leather case. Oh well, I guess I will have to return it now.

Me and my big mouth! Or should I say me and my big fingers in a forum?

Sorry, brother. I’ll accept some of the blame. However, your comments definitely constituted a near occasion of getting beaten up on. 😉

I want to buy an ipod so i can download and listen to all the Catholic Answers shows that Jimmy Akin is on. But my wife says if we can’t afford the table lamp she’s been asking for, we can’t afford an ipod. I told her it’s for my spiritual welfare but she doesn’t listen. Can you believe she’s so mean. How can I convince her 😉
I dont want you to take this the wrong way, but I take from what you posted that your wife is superficial. I have 3 ways of handling this that come to mind, and which you use will depend on your wife’s personality. 1 get a temporary 2nd part time job to pay for your ipod, it shows youir dedication and how much you need it. 2 give her an assignment to explain why a stupid lamp is more important that something you can recieve your Catholic programming from, if her explaination doesnt cut it, you get the ipod. 3 go to a garage sale or thrift shop and get her a cheap lamp, then procede to buy your ipod. after one of these ideas is implemented, Id be asking her how much her Catholic faith means to her.

If you are trying to get an I pod wal-art has them on sale for $48.00 and you get a $15.00 itune card with it (shuffle) I just bought my wife one for easter. IT is great! I think maybe when you go to Wal-mart to get your ipod you could probably pick up a lamp for your wife too! If you have an internet connection, unless you are on some really cheap phone line service you should be able to afford a $48.00 ipod. Another idea would be to sell something you can do without on e-bay. That might get you the money you need. Or, you could go find a second job so you can actually afford to live. I think what the Catholic church needs to do is, look at the state of the economy and think really hard about how the church could advocate for workers who work hard but make very little income and can barely support their families. Father Rice who was the pastor at Imaculate Conception Parish in Washington PA fought for unions and good wages for the people in the Pittsburgh area back in the early to mid 1900’s. He also baptized me. We alll bust our butts to make other people money but, I don’t see too many of my freinds and family ( Catholic or not) making very much headway in having assets that would make their lives better, like owning their own homes, buying new cars and saving for their kids to go to college. It’s not that they don’t want to, it’s just they can’t. When gasoline is over $3.00 per gallon you have to cut costs somewhere. You know, the National Federation of Catholic YOuth Ministry (NFCYM) could do a lot more for youth to get them into colleges and make sure they are able to provide for their families when they get out. If young people felt as if they had a future. After highschool people used to be able to get a decent job that paid good wages. Now, here where I live you have two choices, fastfood or retail jobs, or go to college. No steel mills, no assembly plants nothing. It’s 1929 all over again!

Buy the lamp.

But an iPod shuffle.

I have a shuffle & have 20+ cd’s on it and its not even halfway full!

You think this is mean? I saw this title and I thought you were going to say she beats you and doesn’t let you leave the house except to work and cut the grass.

You don’t need an iPod, or a lamp. You need some communication skills and a budget.

We just re-started a two year old thread…

I’d like to hear from the OP what ended up happening, and how things are going with him and his wife:)

Thanks…it took us several years of feeling like we could never buy anything we wanted to figure out this system. Now if I want an expensive shampoo or some luxury item (like bubble bath) I can buy it guilt-free!!! Yay!!!

Malia
We do something similar (DH does all the budgeting, BTW, he’s better at it and has more investing sense ;)). DH and I each have a set amount each month, which–if everything is going well—we can spend on ourselves or whatever. The first month we did this i bought myself a coffee press…i’m the only one who drinks coffee in the house. 👍

Oh and by the way, whats your wife doing running the family finances? I have been married 18 years going on 19. My wife has not touched the finances in 12 years and our marriage has gotten better every year since as a result. The first 6 were a struggle. Its not that she did a lousy job, she was great at it. It was just too much for her to have on her shoulders. Women have too much to worry about already these days without worrying about finances. Many women are much better at finances than their husbands. My daughter will soon have an MBA in accounting and then God willing her CPA. He soon to be fiance does not have a college education (although he does make a good living). I think my daughter is better qualifed to handle the finances and he thinks so too…she is doing his taxes this year.

Alright, so what if you were just kidding. I think what the bible says is something to the tune of “we are not of this world” meaning worldly posessions are not what we should value. We should value each other. So, when you make fun of your wife wanting a lamp and end table what you are doing is telling us that you and your wife do not value each other but your posessions. I do not put the family finances on my wife, I take care of them. I work in human services so I know how to make a dollar strech. If you need some help making your dollars strech angel food ministries is a good source www.angelfoodministries.com. They have many non-catholic churches participating in this ministry. What they do is sell food at a very discounted rate. $30.00 to feed a single person for a month. We’ve participated and they gave us probably enough food to fed us for longer. We have two small children too. They accept cash and food stamps for payments. I’m in a little bit better place financially so we stopped participating. That, and my work schedule is different so I don’t eat dinner at home. Try joining a credit union too. They are way better than banks because they are out for your best interests. Most are non-profit co-ops. They have loans with very reasonable APR’s and give you a solid way to bring up your credit score with no hidden costs or fine print. Plus, it could help you save money for a major purchase, like a home or car. IPods are fun, but, I think I would rather have a nice house or good car to drive than a silly MP3 player. Wait until you have kids, you won’t have time to sit and listen to an IPod!😃 😃 :😃 😃 👍
