My wife is suffering; how can I help her?

My wife and I are suffering from infertility and it hurts her heart so much. She feels like God is punishing her for something. Her cousin just announced that she is pregnant and it has sent her into a tailspin. She is questioning her faith in God and I don’t know how to help her. How can I explain to her that her suffering will bring her joy at some point?

Dear friend,

God does not ask us to carry a cross in order to hurt us. Such crosses invite us to ponder on how much He loves us to have carried His cross on our behalf. Our Lady’s cousin, Elizabeth, thought that she would never conceive, but God had other plans. We never know what He has planned. It is amazing how often a woman who has not been able to conceive will conceive after having adopted a child. No one can really explain this. Don’t rule out adoption. And, don’t sell God short. You and your wife are in our prayers.
