My boyfriend is learning the rosary, and he asked me why they call them “mysteries”. He said he’s asked different people, and nobody has been able to give him a satisfactory answer. I wasn’t sure either.

A mystery, in Church-speak, is something that is believable and understandable, yet not necessarily provable scientifically or logically. It’s something that requires a certain amount of faith to accept as truth because the human mind may not fully comprehend it. Thus, the “milestone” events of the rosary fall into that category and are termed “mysteries” because we accept them by faith and need to ponder their deeper meanings.

The New Testament refers to the revealed truths of the Christian faith as mysteries (Greek: mysteria). For example, “[Jesus] answered and said to them: Because to you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven: but to them it is not given.” (Matthew 13:11)

Everybody thinks that they already know the “mysteries” of the Rosary.

Wait till you notice that meditating on the mysteries can get you into a higher level of knowledge of the lives of Jesus and Mary
