Mystery of the giant beached cross may be solved
The mystery of a barnacle-covered, wooden cross that washed ashore along a South Florida beach may have been solved. The Miami Herald reports that a woman believes the cross was erected on an island off North Carolina in 2016 in memory of her brother, who disappeared while on a solo hunting trip in Hatteras Inlet.Robin Stowe contacted the newspaper after reports surfaced about the 20-foot cross, which has been captivating tourists since it was dragged from the water’s edge at Fort Lauderdale’s beach last weekend. After Stowe’s brother disappeared, a bunch of friends put the cross on the inlet. Stowe says it likely was swept away during Hurricane Michael last October.People retrieved the cross from the water Wednesday. It was so heavy, some seven to 10 people needed to help carry it, according to local media.“I had goosebumps,” Frank Talerico, owner of nearby Ocean Manor Resort Hotel, told WSVN-TV. "I said, ‘You’re kidding me.’"According to the news outlet, the man who first spotted it by the hotel Saturday was Greg Gay, of Michigan. He said he’s not a churchgoer, but somebody said, “It’s a sign.” “It means a lot to us, though,” he told the TV station. “Something like that only happens once in a lifetime.”
