I may have this in the wrong forum, forgive me.

Could someone explain to me the “mysteries”. This is something I hear a lot, but do not have a clue what they are, what their significance is.

Yes, I can google or wiki them, which I will do, but I would like someone to explain the general idea to me in laymen terms. I guess the same way one would explain to a child. I want to be able to grasp the concept, looking in from the outside.

Mystery is something that it is there but you cannot percieve it.

Mystery of the Holy Eucharist is an example of this. You know it is the Body and Blood, Sould and Divinity of our Lord but you cannot see any blood in there. Its is beyond our senses.

In the NT, musterion is almost always used - 20 times out of 22 - to mean the saving purpose of God as revealed in the Person and Work and Life of Jesus Christ. The “mystery of God” is the secret purpose of God, finally revealed in Christ.

The liturgical meaning, in which the sacraments are called mysteries, is a development of the NT usage, as the sacraments make present in every age and to all mankind the same saving Christ.

There is an OT background for the NT usage, as there is for most NT theology.

In dogmatic theology, a “mystery” is a truth or reality which exceeds the ability of the created intellect to comprehend fully, but which is true nonetheless. The Blessed Trinity is a mystery in this sense.

a mystery is a truth that cannot be discovered or understood by unaided human reason, and can only be known through Divine Revelation. For instance the moral teaching contained in the last 7 commandments of the decalogue can be deduced through natural law and every human society has developed a moral code through the use of human reason. the commandments regarding the Deity can only be known through Revelation. the NT teaching of Christ enlarging on the commandments and giving the prescription for the moral life in Christ based on the beatitudes is revelation. Unaided human reason does not come up with meekness, purity of heart and poverty of spirit as a prescpription for happiness. God’s Revelation is complete and entire in the person of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, second Person of the Trinity, the Word of God Incarnate.

Greetings ReflectHim, Mystery is one of the profound topics in Catholic Church teachings (Ephesians 5:32 "This is a great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and the Church.). Jesus himself revealed mysteries to the Magesterium who brings them down to us today through our holy father the Pope and Bishops.(1Cor.4:1 Thus should one regard us: as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God). Speaking as a lay person the mysteries of God are revealed to us beginning at Baptism and the sacraments.(Luke 8:10 He answered, "The knowledge of the mysteries of the Kingdom of God has been granted to you: but to the rest, they are made known through parables so that they may look but not see, and hear but not understand. ) The mysteries are then enriched or enlightened dependent on the individual who contiunes to seek God in the sacraments, through prayer, scripture reading etc. One of the greatest mysteries is how God made the Jews and the Gentiles no more making all one body in Chirst.(Romans 11:25 I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers, so that you will not become wise in your own estimation: a hardening has come upon Israel in part, until the full number of the Gentiles comes in… Romans16:25 Now to him who can strengthen you, according to my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery kept secret for long ages…).
