I have a simple question. What is the difference between the Mystical Body of Christ and the Communion of Saints?

I’m still a greenstick in the Faith, but here’s my take on it (with a little research quickly thrown in):

The Mystical Body of Christ (also called the Mystical Body of the Church) is the supernatural life we experience in Christ when becoming a Christian through the use of the Sacraments, particularly the Holy Eucharist.

The Communion of Saints is the spiritual family we on Earth share (the Church Militant), with the saints above and those in purgatory (the Church Triumphant). The Communion of Saints is a subset of the Body of Christ, if I read the Catholic Encyclopedia entry correctly.

The two terms are almost interchangeable, because they are closely linked.To simplify, we can say the Church is the Mystical Body of Christ. The Church is usually said to be the people of God. The Church is usually said to be three:

Church Militant - people of God on earth
Church Suffering - holy souls in Purgatory
Church Triumphant - souls in Heaven

All three of these are linked (through the communion of saints), meaning we are all one body, Christ is the head, and there is a marvellous exchange - particularly with prayers, which can take place within this Mystical Body of Christ.

The mystical Body of Christ incorporates the Communion of Saints and everyone in Heaven. We are also an integral part of the mystical Body of Christ (His Church) as we receive His true mystical Body (His resurrected Body) through the Eucharist, and share in all the benefits of grace and good works by those within the Church.
