Mythology

I just received my copy of Shattering the Christ Myth, Did Jesus Not Exist, by James Patrick Holding. Most of the book is over my head and, really, seems to show that there are lots of parallels between Jesus and a large number of pagan Christs.
  1. Are there any books you all can recommend that are pretty basic, easy to understand and just explain definitively that the Bible has not copied anything about Jesus from mythology?
  2. I know Jesus is a live historical figure, I’ve no doubt He truly walked the face of the Earth. Were any of the stories of pagan gods based on real people?
What you’re asking for is essentially impossible for anyone to provide. You’re asking for definitive proof that something DIDN’T happen at any point over centuries for which we have very little primary source material. How is anyone going to establish that none of the countless Christian theologeons and writers drew no influence from earlier pagan ideas? And if they did, why would that diminish the message for you? If the Christ story does share parallels or even derive from earlier souces, couldn’t that mean that the underlying message is of timeless importance for our species?

About the best you can hope for is to find some authors who can argue that Christianity is in some ways fundamentally revolutionary in its thinking and that its mythology is fundamentally different. But again, you’re likely to find that those are fairly involved in technical language.

As to the second question, how do you “know” Jesus was a historical figure or that he was as the church says? Primary evidence for that too is pretty thin, to say the least. If it’s something you take on faith, why do the pagan parallels trouble you so? To your final point, pagans are all over the map as to how literally we take the accounts of the gods. We know they’re real because they come to our ritual space. Most of them have been known to take human form or sire human offspring, but they are not claimed as a general matter to have lived on this plane as you and I and Jesus are purported to…

I may be wrong, but I don’t think Jesus cut Mary’s head off.
Maybe I am mixing up myths here.

But, Jesus never cut anyone’s head off, let alone his mother’s.

They may be in for worse than that, but that is not the point here.
I replied very early on in this thread, yet the OP recently posted this:

Okay, well then maybe I’m just not very intelligent – sue me. I did read some of the previous threads on CAF about this topic the threads dragged on, veering way off topic or it the discussions went over my head. The specific points about the parallels between Horus and Osiris vs Christ were lost on me after a few posts. Better to be succint than to just ramble on.
If I’ve missed some threads discussing this that are to the point, no tempers flaring, no insults being thrown around, staying on topic and are written so someone without a college degree can read them, link them please. I’d be more than thrilled to read them.

Can I ask what the basis would be to draw a parallel between Horus and Osiris vs Christ? Can we toss Thor and Mo in the mix? Why or why not?

I’ve recently been hearing about Horus and Osiris but any mythological figures could be added, too.

It’s not just the Trinity that I’m talking about, but this, for example:religioustolerance.org/chr_jcpa5b.htm If these comparisons between Horus and Jesus arae true, they sound close to the same story to me.
I’m sorry to say but the Religious Tollerance site, although it claims to be impartial, it has some very questionable ‘scholarship’ behind it.

Also the analogies between Horus and Jesus are not entirely correct and have been debunked…

If Religious Tolerance (R.T.) gets its info from books from Acharaya S then it belongs in the trash.
In the beginning I actually tought it was an impartial and decent site… but after careful examination of several of their pages I noticed it was mostly nonsense.

This site: philvaz.com/apologetics/HORUS.htm explains many errors and false claims perpetrated by Acharaya S, Zeitgeist The Movie and also R…T.org…
