NAB and Joel Chapter 4

Why is it that the NAB has a different chapter and verse selection than most other translations? How did the NAB come up with a chapter four that most other translations call Chapter three?

From what I can see, the NAB split Joel 2 into two chapters, with chapter 2 being 2:1-27 and chapter 3 being 2:28-32.

The Catholic Encyclopedia says thus:

The seventy-three verses of this small book, in the Massoretic text of the Old Testament, are divided into four, and in the Septuagint and Vulgate into three, chapters, the second and third chapters of the Massoretic text forming one chapter, the second in the Septuagint and Vulgate.

I personally like how the Douay-Rheims has Joel laid out rather than the NAB. It makes it hard when some text follow one suit and another text follows another suit. Makes it hard to make comparisons between the two. Same can be said for the Psalms different numbering in the NAB than the Douay-Rheims. Makes it harder to compare between the two

I don’t have one with me at the moment to double-check but I believe the New Jerusalem Bible also has four chapters.

As I have recently found out, there is a Greek and a Hebrew version of the Book of Joel. The Septuagint and the Douay-Rheims version have the three chapter Greek version and the NAB uses the Hebrew four chapter divisions.

I was caught red-faced when I asked my seventh graders to open their NAB to Joel Chapter 3 verse 30. They all exclaimed that there is no verse 30 and that verse 27 is where chapter 3 ends. Well, that teaches me not to use my RSV- Catholic Edition when my students have a different version.
