I have heard of this before, but was reading over some of the books last night, Many of the statements by Jesus are very helpful and insightful as to how the mind of Jesus worked, I think it has helped me, although I dont understand much of it

I know this is Gnostic, but is it still OK to read and learn from? Can we be fairly sure the statements of Jesus are true?

No. On the contrary, they are basically works of fiction, though in some cases the authors seem to have been well-intentioned and may have based their work on earlier, authentic, traditions. .

As long as you are grounded in the faith there is no harm in reading ancient Gnostic literature. Keep a few things in mind:
  1. the literary style is not the same as the Gospels.
  2. they are dated to the 2nd century, with many borrowings from the Gospels.
  3. physical matter is evil
  4. Gospel of Thomas: “Simon Peter said to them, ‘Make Mary leave us, for females don’t deserve life.’ Jesus said, ‘Look, I will guide her to make her male, so that she too may become a living spirit resembling you males. For every female who makes herself male will enter the kingdom of heaven’” (Thomas 114).
    (um… I don’t think so)
The Claims of the Gospel of Judas

Did the Church suppress the Gospel of Thomas because it was afraid of what it contained?

Do you know how Protestants take Gospel quotes out of context in order to support their erranious doctrines? Imagine if they took just those out-of-context statements and listed them in a document. Then, imagine them adding some new quotations, ones that Christ did not say, on top of the out-of-context quotations, in order to further support their false theology?

This is the “Gospel” of Thomas.

That “Gospel” (it’s not actually in the genre of Gospel) is trash, theologically speaking (historically speaking, though, it’s AWESOME 😃 )

Remember, we don’t deprive our beliefs from the Bible; rather, the Bible is a result of Catholic Faith.

One way that it’s useful is that we get to catch these gnostics in the act of fabricating one of their scriptures by taking sayings from Eugnostos in one writing (Eugnostos the Blessed) and putting them in Jesus’ mouth in another (The Sophia of Jesus Christ).

Insightful as to how the mind of Jesus worked? Probably not, but definitely insightful as to how the minds of the gnostics worked.

The Gnostic heresy was addressed in the early church and their errant beliefs rejected outright. Pieces of their heresy have arisen in different forms even to this day: women priests, abstain from marriage for fear of procreating and making “new” matter (which they considered bad), and the contrary position that matter doesn’t matter at all so people can be as promiscuous as they like! Their worst belief, in my opinion, is that Jesus was NOT God Incarnate but a spirit that only looked like a man.

I would not recommend reading any of their material because it may confuse you and others.

No. We can be fairly sure they aren’t, with one major exception.

They were written much later than the canonical Gospels, with the possible exception of the Gospel of Thomas. That’s the only one that may possibly give us authentic words of Jesus. Whether the GoT gives us any independent access to Jesus’ teachings, or whether it was just a riff on the material we have in more authentic form in the Synoptics, is debated by scholars.
