Do you ever just get this sinking feeling of what if there really isn’t anything after death? Even with all that’s happened in my life, making it pretty clear that there is a God who loves me personally, I’ve been having these nagging feelings. Like, what if spiritual things are just a human invention or something, or if all of the spiritual encounters in my life were all in my head? It’s probably the devil trying to get into my head. Please say a couple of prayers for me?

Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.

I say that a LOT. I suspect doubts about an afterlife are common, but people don’t talk about it. Since I do believe in God, I’ve learned to turn that over to him. Whatever happens to me after I die is his decision.

The notion tries once in a while to disturb me but I dismiss it. The fear that we die and are just gone is a difficulty, an apprehension. Cardinal Newman said, “Ten thousand difficulties do not make a single doubt”. Faith is a gift of God to those who sincerely seek Him. It is “the substance of things to be hoped for, the evidence of things that are not seen.” Hebrews 11:1. If it were untroubled, without difficulties, or even those nagging doubts, it wouldn’t be faith. It would be the certainty you will possess when you arrive in the Kingdom of Heaven.

John Chapter 14, the Last Supper discourse.
I belief Jesus’ own words on the matter.
Peace.

Would you like someone to post this in Prayer Intentions?

PM me or respond to this post, and I can do that for you, but I need your permission per site policy.

My advice is to get a good spiritual director. Find a priest that you trust and say, “Father, can I set up an appointment with you?”

I talked to my Bishop about this before. I told my Bishop that I’ve had doubts before recently. His advice was to get a good spiritual director. He also told me that sometimes the doubts are our fault. Other times it’s allowed by God to help strengthen our faith. He also told me that even Mother Teresa had many doubts! Having those nagging feelings aren’t uncommon; they don’t make you “less Catholic”.

Whenever you have those doubts, make sure you pray “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief”. God bless.

Get a picture of Jesus that you like. Then each day just stare at it for a few minutes. No thoughts or words are necessary. It does wonders.

Let’s say there is a God but still, there may be nothing after death…Wouldn’t you trust this God enough to accept the plan?.
That is exactly the conclusion I came to. It is, I think, the ultimate in trust. I don’t need to know what is going to happen to me after this life ends.

I wonder if those who feel a need to know would reject God if there were no heavenly afterlife. I would continue to be a Catholic even if there was proof of no afterlife - for me, it’s the best way to live my life now.
