Just curious… what are yall’s thoughts on sending naked or half naked pictures of yourself to your spouse while you are apart for an extended period of time?
I’ve done it plenty of times with people I’ve dated. I love posing. It’s great fun, and your husband will love it.

Hi

I have been reading and have different thoughts.

Pope John Paul II, Love and Responsibility

There are circumstances in which nakedness is not immodest. … Immodesty is present only when nakedness plays a negative role … when its aim is to arouse concupiscence (bold added)

Pope John Paul II, General Audience

Yet, the biblical description from Sirach (23:17-22) includes some elements maintained to be “classic” in the analysis of carnal concupiscence. One element of this kind, for example, is a comparison between concupiscence of the flesh and fire. Flaring up in man, this invades his senses, excites his body, involves his feelings and in a certain sense takes possession of his heart. (bold added)

Just curious, but are you implying that it is wrong for spouses to be naked in front of each other as part of their preperation for the marital act? There is a difference between nakedness aimed at inciting desire among the general populus and nakedness aimed at inciting desire in ones own spouse.

Not saying that I wouldn’t have a large grin if my wife did this but…Sexual pictures outside the context of marital love make the person an object for pleasure, taking them outside the context of mutual gift of self. Just because the two are married does not mean that one spouse cannot objectify the other. The nude photo regards the person as less than a full person, makes them an object.

Couldn’t have said it better! 👍

I think a couple people have already alluded to this same thought.

I do disagree. I don’t see how seeing me naked in person can be loving and special and holy, and seeing me naked in a picture would make my husband see me as an object to be used. That’s a horrible, unloving thing for anyone to see another person as an object to be used and abused… especially a loving spouse. My husband would never ever see me that way. Being in a picture or in person won’t change that.

Thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut to the discussion, Clem.

In the nakedness of the marital act the couple is giving themselves to each other, physically. The pleasure involved in the marital act, foreplay, etc, is good, it was put there by God.

A picture is not a person. A picture cannot give itself to the other person. The other person cannot receive the naked person by holding their picture. It is objectifying whether the person realizes it or not.

FYI, if you read Love and Responsibility you will see that lust is even possible within marriage, even with regards to the marital act, but that is not what I am talking about here, and it isn’t something for us to go crazy about, just something to make sure we educate ourselves on to make sure we love our spouses as we should.

I don’t think clem is necessarily saying it is something your husband would do. I think he’s saying that there is a higher propensity for it to happen. Nudity with a sexual tinge in person is different from such a display on a screen or in a hardcopy photograph. The mind is a very tricky thing and the difference in the medium provides for the opportunity for dissonance to arise, leading to objectification.

There’s just a difference between my wife in person and my wife in a picture that I can’t really describe with words.

I think a married couple doesn’t have to be in the process of having sex to be able to enjoy the beauty of each other’s bodies without it being some sort of sin.

I see what you’re saying. And this would definitely be something to think about and consider if the husband is someone who has had a weakness/history of impurity or excessive porn use and struggles with objectification of women. But I think if that were the case, it would be an issue in person too… Not just in a picture. Though I agree there would be a higher propensity for it to happen via photograph.

The pp was asking about nakedness in sex, so I was referring to that. Of course it isn’t sinful for a married couple to be naked in front of each other without sex. That being said, a piece of paper with the picture of your naked spouse is not the same thing as being with your naked spouse.

This.
It reduces the person to an object. It’s different that seeing the spouse naked in the bedroom.
I am also not going to get real upset with my wife if she sent me a naked pic. Heck no.

We are old enough that naked pics would be an occasion for laughter anyway (that is a commentary right there on the principles involved)

Along the same lines, do engagement/wedding photos of my wife reduce her to an object? Should I throw them out?

Gotcha.

I know it’s not the same… I just don’t agree that it’s sinful or impure in and of itself.

A PICTURE doesn’t reduce someone to an object. A PERSON however, can, in their minds and hearts, reduce someone to an object at any given time. Whether in picture or in person.

Like TheBucket said… if a husband has/had issues with impurity/lust/porn/etc etc, I can see how it would be easier to objectify someone through picture vs in person.

I think that some of the confusion and disagreement within this thread comes from a bit of naivety regarding not understanding how difficult it can be for a young, healthy male that enjoys sex to remain pure and chaste in our world in both body and (here’s the hard one) mind! We are hit in the face with it every time we turn on the tv, listen to the radio, drive past a billboard, stand in the checkout line, etc… And it isn’t always easy to keep our minds off of things we shouldn’t think about. It doesn’t matter how devout we are or how much we love our wives.

Debora, please don’t take any offense to any of this… But please don’t discount the advice you have received from so many males on this thread that have told you that, even though it would be appreciated, it might not be a good idea. Your husband might be the most perfect guy in the world, but he is still susceptible to great temptation. He isn’t Jesus. And if you think the devil won’t attempt to use your time apart to try and wiggle his way in, then you are sadly mistaken.

I agree with he (or she) whose name has a number sequence that probably has more meaning than mine. 😃
