Why do so many priests on ETWN satellite tv have the last name Mary? Do they change their last name to Mary when they are ordained, in honour of our Blessed Mother Mary, or is this just a coincidence???

it is not a last name, it is more of a “middle name” as they have chosen a name in religion, as traditionally members of religious orders have done, and they usually chose 2 names, one of them an appelation of Mary.
Sister Mary Thomas
Sister Bernard Marie
Brother Jean Marie
Brother Francis Mary

they may in ordinary conversation simply refer to each other by one name, Jean, Francis, Thomas, etc., or by both names.

their legal baptismal name does not change any more than it does when we choose another saint for a confirmation name and patron. in some orders members simply retain their baptismal name as their name in religion.

Honestly, I think it’s sort of silly. I wouldn’t do it if I were a priest. My name is my name.👍

As an ordinary guy, why would I need to change my name? The Catechism comments at length on the importance of one’s name.🤷

Changing ones name when you enter a religious order is symbolic of your death from the world and the beginning of your new life in Christ. It is similar to Saul becoming Paul. I think that diocesan priests don’t follow the same idea because they are still in the world as opposed to the religious who are out of this world. Don’t quote me on that though.

As for having Mary in the name… I know the Eastern Province of the Dominican Order requires that your second name be a form of Mary, Joseph or Dominic. (This only applies to the brothers and priests). I’m sure many religious have willingly taken Mary out of gratitude and devotion to the Blessed Mother.

As I will never be taking vows to a religious order I’m thankful that I was already given a Marian middle name! 🙂
