Name for God in Arabic languages

What name is given for God in an Arabic or Farsi Translation of a Christian Bible?

I am in a discussion with a Baptist Minister who insists that Allah is a name that Mohamed made up for his god, who can’t possibly be the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I think I need a bit more than opinions. :confused: :confused:

Jesus is “Isa”, and Lord is “Rabb”. I don’t know if Arabic has a word specifically for YHWH.

In my Arabic NT Jesus is “Yasuu3,” where the 3 represent “3ain,” a consonant that is totally foreign to English speakers.

I can’t lay my hands on my full Arabic Bible, but the pertinent verses are Ex. 3:14-15:
14 And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel,‘I AM has sent me to you.’” 15 Moreover God said to Moses, "Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations.’ (NKJV)

I can’t lay my hand on my full Arabic Bible, but the on-line one that I can lay my hands on for “I AM WHO I AM” is “Uhiih aladhi uhiih” (caveat–that might be “ahiih;” the Arabic in the on-line version is not vowel-pointed. I think the verb is 4th measure, but it could be first.) “Uhiih/Ahiih” is repeated in “Tell them I AM has sent…” LORD is, in Arabic letters, YHWH. Without the vowel pointing, I don’t know how it is pronounced. However, in 3:2 and 3:4 LORD is al-rabb, pronounced “ar-Rabb,” “the Lord.”

In the physical Lebanese Arabic Bible that I have, Exodus 3:14 is rendered:

Ana Hua Alathi Hua

I looked up the online one here, and I get something like Ahya Alathi Ahya. You’re right, it doesn’t have the vowel pointing.

Rather then arguing the linguistics of Allah, point out that early Christians considered Islam to be a Christian heresy rather than a religion of a false god.

John of Damascus wrote the definitive treatise on the heresy of the Ishmaelites (as Muslims were first called):

We’re not going to get very far in converting Muslims by claiming their God is a false God and their entire religion is false. We’ll only suceed by acknowledging those truths that Islam got right and correcting those things Islam got wrong. Islam got the one God doctrine right. Ditto for submit to God.
