The Name of our Father has been given to us in the Old Testament through Moses. Exodus 3:13 reveals His name as “I AM WHO I AM” and it goes on to say “YAHWEH, the God of your fathers…” .
Actually, I believe the translation is “I AM WHO AM.” God isn’t saying He is Himself; He is saying that he is everything.

wouldn’t YHWH mean Yahweh? That only seems to make sense to me.

But why does Yod-he have to be pronounced at Yah and not Yeh? I see no justification for that. The name of G-d isn’t exactly a well kept secret or some lost Arcane knowledge.

I just wonder why they come to these conclusions.
I have no personal knowledge of ancient Hebrew. I know that the fact it was written only in consonants poses serious difficulty, because no one knows the precise pronunciation. The Hebrew people later forgot the original pronunciation of the ancient form of their language.

The Catholic Encyclopedia [Our Sunday Visitor, Rev. Peter M.J. Stravinskas, Editor, 1991] says “The basic linguistic meaning of the word [Yahweh] has not to date been established beyond doubt.”

Yahweh has been translated as I AM WHO AM, or HE WHO IS, indicating that God revealed himself as Pure Existence. It has been suggested that as a from of the verb “to be” YHVH means that Yahweh is “THE ONE WHO CAUSES TO BE WHATEVER COMES TO BE.”

The abbreviated form of YHVH – “Yah” – occurs twenty-five times in the Old Testament text. ‘Hallelu-YaH’ (praise God) is one example.

[Reference: Stravinskas, p. 971]

So I would suppose scholars have supporting evidence such as this and other documentation for the rendering.
