Strictly speaking Pippin is only a nickname. The Hobbit’s full name is Peregryn Took.
Pegegryn is a cool name however.

There is a musical called Pippin based on the son of Charlemagne, sometimes spelled Pepin.

In Italian a number of diminutives of Giuseppe (Joseph) are similar. Peppe, Peppino, Beppe.

So Pippin is basically just another version of Joe.

Aira and Arja are girl´s names in Finland. Tho ones I know are in their 60s or thereabout.

Off topic, but some people say that GoT is gratuitous and basically porn. Is it true? It’s popular so I wonder what’s so great about the series, but i am wary.

As with many shows on HBO, there are scenes of naked/semi-naked people having provocative and titillating sexual encounters. The Catechism defines pornography as such:
CCC 2354 Pornography consists in removing real or simulated sexual acts from the intimacy of the partners, in order to display them deliberately to third parties.
It sounds like it fits that description to me. But I know many Catholic fans of the show who are adamant that it is not pornography. I would be willing to grant that it’s not a porn show as that is not the sole focal point of the show, but it seems evident to me from what I have read that many episodes contain pornographic scenes.

I think it boarders on being soft core porn. I only watched the first few seasons before I grew sick of the gratuitous sex AND violence
(seriously who wants to see some guy get his head smashed in?!..not me that’s for sure 🤢)
…I suppose people could argue that the books are better but honestly I don’t think so…WAY too many characters and still a lot of sex and violence( and GRRM is no JRR Tolkien…)

Yes

I started out reading the books and way too much sex and violence. I didn’t finish reading the first book and when the series came out, I had zero desire to watch it.

I’ll stick to reading Tolkien. Much more edifying.

I think I’ve never quite grasped what the difference is between “soft-core” and “hard-core” pornography, and I don’t particularly think it would be conducive to my growth in holiness for someone to explain the difference to me. 😝

I watched the first two episodes and haven’t looked back. I don’t think that it’s appropriate.

I think Sansa’s a pretty name. But I’ve already made up my mind to name any daughter I might have Marina.
I hope you have like six daughters and have to call them “Marina 1, Marina 2, etc.”

Hey, it worked for George Foreman. Mind you he called all his sons George after himself.

Then there was Marie Antoinette’s mother who had (I think) 15 daughters, all of em had the first name Maria. They had different middle names (obvs)

I don’t justify the sexually explicit scenes, but I will note the following:
-they noticeably tamed them down as the show progressed (and became increasingly mainstream)
-everyone I’ve talked to honestly watches it for the epic faux medical politics, fantasy, family drama, massive battles etc.

I skip over the sex scenes. There’s still a lot of captivating content remaining.

I’ve read (on First Things I think it was) that the show is like Tolkien if he had been an atheist with no value system: in other words there is suffering aplenty but it doesn’t serve any purpose or point to anything greater than ‘life is short and brutal.’ Seems a little too nihilistic for me.

Well that’s probably fair. Still enjoyable even if it’s not LOTR’s equal.
