Name products you've discovered that work better than their predecessors

One of my new favorites is Monkey Hooks for hanging paintings and picture frames. Easier to install than the old fashioned plastic kind that push through the pilot hole or strip and spin in a circle. They also seem to be heavy duty. I have no financial interest in them.
 
I like those new TV’s that have a color picture. Much better than the older ones.

LED light bulbs.

It’s taken a little while, but they are now affordable. Cree retail for $10 per bulb, and save on your electricity bills and don’t need to be replaced for decades.
 
When digital cameras first came out, they were awful. Low resolution, off color, difficult to connect to your computer. They are so much better now.
 
Flash drives. I remember when they first came out they cost quite a bit for not very much memory, now they’re very cheap and you can store tons of data on them.

Also, though not quite a “product,” Internet speeds. It’s nice to not have to wait 15 minutes for your email to load (while also possibly missing a phone call.) I remember trying to call home to have my mom pick me up from a field trip (she had misremembered what time to pick me up) and someone was on the Internet. The principal was about to drive me home when my mom pulled up, oblivious to the fact that I had spent the past hour crying wondering why she wasn’t there. :o (At that point I don’t think any of us had cell phones.)
 
Hey, how about Catholicism? Works so much better than to still be waiting for the Messiah 2000 years later…

Absolutely! No mercury and they start up right away. Better than CFLs.

My entry–iPods! Much better than any previous portable music options.

Hair straighteners are amazing now. My daughter bought a GHD and I thought she was nuts for spending so much money but now that I’ve tried it, it really is an amazing piece of equipment compared to the heating things we had 30/ 40 years ago. They were murder on your hair.

The wattage of the first generation of CFLs seemed lower than traditional bulbs, making it difficult to see. Is this true of LEDs too? Do the LEDs emit a light that is bluish?
 
The Internet, way back when before Compuserve and Prodigy. You needed to know computer language to use the net, and you had to use your phone line with a 1200 bit Modem, talk about slow.

BTW Just bought a house that had a ton of monkey hooks, they are very easy to remove.

And the Cree Lightbulbs are made in the USA another reason to buy them. Plus the light they give off are better then a regular light bulb and they now come in dimmable, and three way sizes.
 
Shouldn’t almost any product work better than its predecessors?

I’m sure there are some exceptions, and there’s always someone who’ll say something like “they don’t make 'em like they used to”, but on the whole most products are improved over time.

LEDs work well. Light output and color seem fine to me (unlike the CFL), and they come on at full intensity immediately even in cold temps (unlike the CFLs). They are what the CFLs were hyped to be originally (but turned out *not *to be!).

The key word in your statement: “should.” My clothes washer is a prime example, as well as the other 4 that I’ve burned through in last than 10 years :mad:

My addition to the greatly improved? Diapers, both clothe and disposable! So much better than the ones out 20-25 years ago! 👍

I kinda miss my old car. Carburetor (not fuel injectors), magneto ignition system (not electronic), and manual transmission. “What,” you may ask, “is so good about a carburetor, magneto, and manual transmission?” I’m glad you asked. 😉 The answer is that you can do a push start. You can actually start the car with a dead battery. I know what you’re thinking: “Not something you need every day.” Yeah, but it came in handy on a few occasions. Just get the thing rolling, put it in gear, the engine starts, and you’re on your way.
