Name some "odd-sounding" scripture passages

Here is one:

Colossians 1:24:

“Now I rejoice in what was suffered for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church.”

here is what is said @

“Jesus suffered in order to establish the reign of God, and anyone who continues his work must share this suffering. I am not sure that explains the whole thing…

then there is that one about how the meek will inherit the earth… never did understand that one… :confused:
 
I thought you were starting a thread to collect all of the “I can’t believe that’s in the Bible! :eek:” verses, like Deuteronomy 23:2 (verse 1 in some translations). 😛

In regards to that verse from Colossians, I think you’re probably right that it’s not a “full” explanation. Keep in mind that the guy who wrote it is Episcopalian, not Catholic. So he’s coming at it from a different viewpoint.

i didn’t know he was episcopalian… hmmm… guess i should be more observant…

i may have attention deficit disorder…

another weird one is the snake talking to the woman in the garden…

and yet it is satan, really…

so why does god punish the lowly snake???

hmmmm…

if i didnt have the Real Presence to keep me being a Christian, i would tend to think that Christianity didn’t always make sense:confused:

Actually, the Hebrew word in the Bible doesn’t mean “snake” or “serpent”.

It means HIDEOUS HUGE DRAGON MONSTER!!!

No, really. It does. That’s where all that other dragon=Satan stuff comes from.

Personally, I’m comfortable with God making dragons crawl on their bellies.

that’s weird… never recall reading that in Deut… i have the douay Rheims Bible and prefer it to the NAB

i wonder if that is why i don’t recall this??

frankly i didn’t even know the word for a man’s genitalia were in the Bible anywhere…

hmm… Now why would God exclude those people ???

who wrote Deut ?? Moses??

i wonder if they only excluded those who deliberatley mutilated themselves???

and why would he exclude illegiitame chldren when it isn’t their fault they are illigitimate?? :confused:

wow… i am kinda sorry i started this thread… :eek:

i never read this one either… The Church teaches if you go to mass every day you will hear the Bible in 3 yrs… the whole thing… So how did i miss these passages??

i am going to look it up in Douay Rheims…

weird… no comprendo… :confused:

i wonder if the children were actually manifestations of the devil???

Yes, the D-R phrases it a bit differently. A lot of the laws in Deuteronomy don’t make much sense to us 21st century people. A good commentary is helpful for this. It will be great once Ignatius Press finally gets to the Old Testament with their Study Bible. I’m very interested to read about passages like this in there.

Really, we only get about 80% of the Bible in a three year cycle. I think you get more if you’re also doing the Liturgy of the Hours. Before Vatican II, I think it was around 20 or 30 %, though. I’m not sure of the exact percentages, just going from memory of what I’ve heard.

Another verse us adolescent boys were fond of regurgitating was Sirach 25:12 (verse 19 in the D-R). Of course, when you look at the larger context of the passage (such as Sirach 26:1-4) or if you look at other translations of the same verse (like the D-R or the RSV), you see that the verse does not mean nearly what it appears to mean in isolation. Such is the danger of cherry picking verses out of context.

We shouldn’t be afraid of these verses, though. If it’s in Scripture, it’s there for a reason. It’s not always easy to see that reason, but it’s up to us to look into it. You can rest assurred that some anti-Christians out there delight in nothing more than pointing out such verses to the unsuspecting in an attempt to “prove” the foolishness of Christianity. It’s best to be educated about it.

i agree…

but again, if it weren’t for the Real Presence of Christ in the RCC i would not be much of a Christian… i may still be a Christian but not a devout… fanatical one…

and of course, i am fanatical… so called… I am sure that’s what people who know me think. :rolleyes:

in any case, i have yet to look up those odd sounding psgs someone posted… i guess it isn’t going to change much so i figure, Why bother??

just curious, though…
 
it says to pray for your enemies and do good to those who despitefully use you…

but then in (i think it is) 1 Peter 5 something… it says not to pray for someone guilty of a mortal sin (a sin unto death)… or am i not reading it correctly???

it says that if someone sins a sin not unto death, you can pray and & ask … and that person will be givne life… but the one who is guilty of a sin unto death…to that, “i say do not ask”

hmmm…

i know one thing, it is NOT easy for me to pray for those whose lives indicate they do NOT care one thing about God and his ways… and i sometimes feel i don’t have to…:confused: but… umm… again, the aforementioned… 🤷
