Name the last thing you ate and drank

I eat tomatoes and tomato sauce daily. Tomatoes are a staple in California diets, too. Sorry you can’t have them, Lily. Hope you feel better.

I had cheddar-broccoli soup and Coke. I rarely drink anything carbonated, though.

Going to have an orange scone and tea soon, I hope.

No baking soda either. Nothing acidic. My esophagus can’t handle it. That’s one reason I’m having throat surgery when I can get in to have it done. My stomach is pushing up into my throat. Anything spicy or acidic causes me to have GERD. I failed all the meds.
Oh, so, so sorry to hear that, Lily. I had GERD in the past. Was put on Prilosec, and that took care of the problem. Twice, when I forgot my pill, I had reflux so bad at night, it burned my vocal cords (and I’m a singer) so badly, I couldn’t make any sound for three weeks! Never forgot my pill again. The GERD has stopped now, though, and I can eat anything I want. Hope the surgery resolves your problem entirely.

Strangely, my voice seemed to get better after the GERD episodes! LOL I had shingles recently due to stress, and my doctor wanted me to take antivirals for a while to ensure no more shingles (I can’t have Zostavax vaccine), but they give me very vivid and weird dreams. Hate that! Scared me away from them because I’ve heard they give some people hallucinations. I’d rather have the shingles, painful as they are!

I’ve been on all the meds. Prilosec, Prevacid, Pepcid, Nexium, etc. Started with OTC strength and then went prescription strength. My throat is badly burned from all the GERD which is a several times a day event. That’s why I’m having the surgery to repair my throat and get my stomach back where it’s supposed to be. It’s pushing into my throat. Was told it’s common with those who’ve had their gallbladders removed. Gee, I never knew the gallbladder was so important.🤔

Right now, I’m off of anything tomato. Can’t have spices. (That caused my renal failure a few years ago which I nearly died from.) I eat a lot of Mexican food and have had to majorly adapt my recipes so I can still have them.

Can’t have onions or garlic. Asafetida was recommended as a substitute. It does the job giving the taste of but not the after effects.

Apart from these, I’m trying to stick to as bland a diet as I can. I was naughty during the Christmas season. But now that I’ve had my tests to decide which surgery is best, I have to behave so I can have the surgery. Everything depends on the weather and now, the government shutdown as we pool our finances together to not only get my mother’s bills paid next month (if this goes on a long time) but all the essential bills. Some can be put off. But utilities and power can’t. And of course, we need to get groceries.

Mama is having an egg for breakfast. And I will have Boost.

I’ll send positive thoughts your way, Lily. I really hope you can have the surgery soon, and I hope it solves the problems, which sound just horrible!

A lot of people say the government shutdown really isn’t hurting anyone, but I keep saying it will be hurting a lot of people.

Keep us posted on your condition - as much as you’re comfortable with - and know we care.

Thanks so much, ConstantLearner. We need all the positive thoughts we can get. We were all set to go in for the test results and discuss scheduling the surgery. But now that the government has shut down, everything’s on hold even tho the weather’s now cooperating.

Mama was a Federal Employee for 45 years. So she’s not happy about the prospect of not getting paid next month. I told her this is one instance in which the President should have the power to veto a government shutdown. Take away the pay of Congress and they’ll reach an agreement toot sweet. It won’t be about DACA or anything else they’re fussing about. It’ll suddenly be about them. “Hey, gimme MY money!”

In the meantime, Mama and I are making sure she has plenty of staples. Bread, peanut butter, eggs, tuna fish, beans, fruit, Ensure and her beloved Hershey bars. We also have plenty of soup. So she’ll be good for awhile. I have jello, Boost, my juices, etc. So we’ll make it through. And the kitties, dog and rooster have plenty to eat. So they’re good.

Hopefully, the shutdown will end soon. When it does, I’ll go to whatever restaurant she wants and get her the meal of her choice.

For now, I’ve had my Boost. So I’m rarin’ to go. Well, as rarin’ as someone with the flu who still has to do laundry can be with the rain coming down.😄

I love those Hershey bars, too! But I rarely eat them. I eat very little really. I’m too small to eat big meals, but I love comfort food liked mashed potatoes and gravy, meatloaf, macaroni and cheese, Italian fare, but I have to limit that kind of stuff or I’d weigh far too much!

Mama’s problem is she doesn’t like comfort foods. She doesn’t like much of anything. It’s very hard to find things she can or will eat. I have to put my foot down and tell her I’ll take her to the hospital where she’ll be fed intraveineously if she doesn’t eat on her own. She was forced to eat as a child. So she has difficulty with it now. She keeps weight on her with a low sodium diet only by the grace of God.

My ideal weight is 105, so I don’t eat much, either, but I do love food.

Going to have some oatmeal now.

Mama is 106 lbs and rebelling against anything that isn’t packaged and processed. I told her, “If this shutdown continues, you’re going to be back on your low sodium vegetables and fruits whether you want to be or not.” She pouted and agreed. I told her she could have 1 Stouffers meal or 1 Banquet pot pie a week. She cannot have them as a daily diet or she’ll be back in the hospital due to the sodium levels.

Of course, since she’s been sick, I’m just trying to get her appetite up. She knows I have Benecalorie and am not afraid to use it if I have to. It can be added to food or beverages. It was recommended to me when she came out of rehab in 2012 (hip revision surgery).

I will probably have soup for lunch.

How tall is she? I’m only 5’0". Banquet sure does make good macaroni and cheese!

I love Banquet’s mac ‘n’ cheese. Mama used to like Stouffers. But when I bought her some recently, the “classic” recipe was different than we remembered. So I let her try the Banquet and she said that wasn’t it either. Since we used to buy both brands (I liked one and she liked the other), I thought maybe it was the Banquet she remembered.

Hmmm… Maybe it’s the mac ‘n’ cheese recipe from Southern Living she remembers. If so, that’s easy peasy to make. So good and whether she realizes it or not, low sodium as well. Mama didn’t raise a stupid daughter.😄😄

Left over beef stew and a diet Mt. Dew.

I am trying to sweet talk my wife into making some cornbread, but so far no luck. I never had the knack for making that myself.

I hope she makes it in a cast iron skillet. Those make the best cornbread.

Do you like sweet cornbread, Milt, or not sweet?

I like both actually, and a yes to the cast iron skillet.
Not bad for a yankee huh?

Not bad at all!

Yankees usually like it sweet, whereas Southerners usually like it not sweet, unless they are African-American. Slaves made it sweet, so passed down sweet cornbread recipes. I like cornbread and navy bean soup. A little strange for a California girl, but I spent time in the Midwest and Northeast.

That’s one of my fav meals! Now I have a hankering to go make some navy bean soup and cornbread. Have the ingredients for both. And it makes the house smell yummy!!!😀
