Our daughter has it on DVD and forced us to watch it. Very few movies can get away with being over 3 hours long (Lawrence of Arabia, Spartacus). But it never seemed to END. Just when I thought âOkay, this has to be the endââŚit kept going on and on and on. I was fixing the cyinide tablets when it FINALLY ended.Agree! No flames here! I am in 100% complete and total agreement. What a horrible movie with unsympathetic characters. Like you I was hoping theyâd drown early on and put us out of our misery!Titanic.

âThe Bells of St. Maryâsâ has become atheist fodder of late, because the Pledge of Allegiance in the movie DOESNâT have âunder Godâ in it. See for yourself here:Was anyone disturbed by the incident in âThe Bells of St. Maryâsâ when Bing Crosby âdoes notâ inform Ingrid Bergman that she is very very sick?
yes good point and I am somewhat guilty of morphing the thread to a discussion of our Catholic teachings on life. That being said, the wayward nature of the thread resulted from someone listing âCider House Rulesâ as one of the worst. However another forum member defended the movie as simply portraying a âchoiceâ made by some in this society. Since this movie deals with and provides a rather sympathetic portrait of abortion and an abortionist, some of us maintain that it has no redeeming value and deserves its âworst movieâ status. What do you think?
Given that youâd like to get the discussion back on point, what movies do you suggest as the worst? Do you believe we as Catholics should financially support, watch or reccommend movies like Cider House Rules?

Whatever medium, when the art is all about the artist, all thatâs produced is junk. When you serve God through your art, you can produce sublime work.
I think the reason I might reject something like CHR is that its portrayal of abortion and abortionists was sympathetic with virtually no concern about the killing of babies by the major character. There are other films where abortion is seen as an evil act. So I wouldnât find that objectionable. Similarly watching a war movie, unless itâs simply propaganda doesnât mean you are pro war.Pretty well anything directed by Clint Eastwood is worth watching.
I donât see that bio-ethical judgements need stop Christians watching a film which features a practice they absolutely reject, any more than Christian opposition to war need stop them watching war films. Of course there is the danger of a disconnection watch we should & what our priciples - but how does watching a film about a practice one rejects contradict oneâs duties ? Fiction films are fiction films, not documentaries - fiction films should surely be judged as such; not mistaken for manifestos of intent. IOW, by aesthetic criteria, which are those proper to them.
Is watching films by James Whale, or featuring Montgomery Clift, a sure sign of support for homosexuality ? That would be like saying that admiring âBrideshead Revisitedâ is proof of being Catholic, homosexual, aristocratic & English. So - surely - with films in which abortion is a part of the story.
holy moly;5630494:
The only horror movie I really like is The Sixth Sense.
It is a ghost story, not a horror movie.
One thing is for certain: it gives a real insight into the brutality of Roman Culture. Remember that every where âgamesâ were under way in which human beings fought to the death. Which is simulated in our most debased films was actually done for the gratification of th audience. It doesnât say itâs an untrue vision. They havenât decided.
ButâŚit does portray that Jesus, âSuffered, died and was burried.â ** This is an article of our faith. ** Pope John Paul II approved of the film, and it is also on the list of best films of 2004 by the USCCB.
I, personally havenât been able to watch the whole film, not because I think itâs bad, but because I am a wimp. I find it too disturbing.
So letâs get back to bad moviesâŚ![]()
It sure doesnât. What a bunch of wimps. Seems really strange in a film soâThe Bells of St. Maryâsâ has become atheist fodder of late, because the Pledge of Allegiance in the movie DOESNâT have âunder Godâ in it. See for yourself here:

The Bells of St Maryâs doesnât have âunder Godâ in it because, at the time it was made, âunder Godâ wasnât part of the Pledge of Allegiance. That phrase was added in 1954, if Iâm not mistaken. The movie was made in 1945, so itâs accurate for itâs time.It sure doesnât. What a bunch of wimps. Seems really strange in a film so
Catholic. What was that Irish film a few years back about the Magdalene Laundries?
Thatâs a hummer. The abused little girl yells âYou are not a man of God.â
Thanks! Now thatâs interesting. The Bells of St Maryâs doesnât have âunder Godâ in it because, at the time it was made, âunder Godâ wasnât part of the Pledge of Allegiance. That phrase was added in 1954, if Iâm not mistaken. The movie was made in 1945, so itâs accurate for itâs time.
Dude looked like a lady!âThe Crying Gameâ made its way down the Netflix pike the other day. Yeaugh!
