Names of Jesus?

I was meditating with/on the Jesus Prayer today and I realized that the names we use for Christ I have always taken for granted. Yes I know what they are, but I just realized after 18 years of using them that I don’t really know what they mean!

Here are the “names” I’m talking about (please feel free to explain the purpose of them and/or the meaning as these are the ones I’m lost on):

Son of David
Son of Man
Master
Root of Jesse

These are the ones I understand, but I’m still not fully comprehending (if that makes any sense!):

Rabbi
The Shepard
Son of God (perhaps none of us will ever fully understand this one…)
Paschal Lamb
Messiah (this one’s deep too)

Any help on any of these is more than welcome!!

Hi Scapularkid… I believe that “Son of David”, “Son of Man” and “Root of Jesse”… are all titles that refer to Our Lord’s Sacred Humanity. In other words, they refer to His human lineage.

“Master” and “Rabbi”… refer to Our Lord’s role as our “Teacher”.

“Shepherd”, refers to the parable of the Good Shepherd (Gospel of John 10:1-5). Jesus is the Shepherd, and we (His followers) are the sheep.

“Paschal Lamb” refers to Jesus, as God’s perfect Lamb. The perfect Sacrifice… which redeemed us all.

“Messiah” is a Hebrew word, meaning… “Anointed”. The Greek translation of this word is “Christ”. Jesus is the Messiah, the Anointed One… the Christ.

And “Son of God”… means simply, what it says. Jesus is the Son of God. The Second Person of the Trinity Who existed, with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit from all eternity.

I think you’re right when you say… that none of us will ever fully understand these mysteries. But I hope that this helps, at least a little bit. God bless.

The Word, or the Logos refers to Jesus as the son of God, eternally existing as God. Jesus is a unification of divinity and man: he is 100% man, and 100% divine. Thus he is both the son of Man, and the son of God. The Son of Man lived and died and was created when the Holy Spirit entered St. Mary. The Son of God is eternal and incarnated himself as the Son of Man.

There’s also the Morningstar, Immanuel, the New Adam, the High Priest of the New Covenant, the Bread of Life, the King of the Jews (used mockingly), et al.

The name “Jesus” is derived from the Aramaic Yeshua which means “Yahweh saves” or alternatively, “Yahweh is salvation.”
