Napoleon Excommunicated?

I heard that Napoleon was Escommunicated. Is this true? Why? Thanks and God bless.
 
I don’t know if Napoleon was ever excommunicated. The 1801 Concordat, which was an agreement between Napoleon and the pope, recognized Catholicism as the religion of the French and also restored the Roman Catholic hierarchy.

Following the french revolution the Church had lost much of its influence in France. When Napoleon came to power he realized the importance of religion in maintaing domestic peace so Napoleon saw this as a necessary step.

I heard an amusing story which I thought was true but which I now consider doubtful. It was to the effect that Napoleon told a French bishop at one point that he would destroy the Catholic Church in France. The bishop replied calmly that a thousand years of French bishops had not been able to destroy the Catholic Church in France, and who was Napoleon to think he could do any better?
