Strictly speaking this is true - although it really falls into the “yes, but” category - since even those outside of the Church (including those who have fallen away from it) who would obviously not receive the sacrament of reconciliation can still receive the grace of salvation.
It would be “yes, but” territory if he were talking about non-Catholics. He’s not: he’s talking about (putatively observant) Catholics.
In the words of the Council Fathers in Lumen Gentium: "Nor does Divine Providence deny the helps necessary for salvation to those who, without blame on their part, have not yet arrived at an explicit knowledge of God and with His grace strive to live a good life.
This sentence is talking about non-Christians; the article’s author is talking about Catholics. The same standards don’t apply to the two groups. That’s why his assertions don’t stand up to scrutiny. 🤷
So really, I think that Mickens is missing the point - it’s not about whether or not reconciliation is truly essential for salvation
Right – if he were talking about all people, that’d be a very good point. However, he’s talking about Catholics, and therefore, the sacraments are – generally speaking – necessary for salvation … including the Sacrament of Reconciliation!

Still, the author draws a clear distinction between believing in the Communion of Saints and the “veneration” of whole bodies. "
Why do you place quotation marks around the word veneration?

I have not seen any Church authority place such marks around the word in regards to the display of relics.

I like the NCR’s liberal commentaries, but if the author feels these two important aspects of Catholicism are incorrect, why don’t they join the PCUSA, or the United Methodist Church, ir the United Church of Christ? If someone denies one of the sacraments and the necessity of invoking the saints, they severed their ties with the Universal Church.

And that’s exactly why I think they should remove their middle name. I wouldn’t waste my time reading any of it, let alone paying for it. God Bless, Memaw
