I always get these two periodicals confused so if I read a quote from an article from one of these I don’t know if I should take it seriously or not.
Isn’t one more liberal? Can someone remind me which one is the better for a Catholic to rely on?

National Catholic Register is very true to the Faith and owned by EWTN. Can’t get any better than that. You can trust the National Catholic Register. I don’t read the other one so I can’t comment first hand. God Bless, Memaw

The National Catholic Reporter was founded to give an “alternative” viewpoint on Catholic matters. Almost from it’s founding, it has been at odds with the hierarchy. At one time it was asked to take “Catholic” out of its name but they refused. They are somewhat to the left of liberal (from a Catholic, not a political definition). There is one good columnist who is fairly orthodox but some of the others are way out there. I tend to stay away from this one since the comments are almost all anti-Church and especially anti-Catholic heirarchy.

The National Catholic Register used to be run by the Legion of Christ and before that by an Archdiocese. It is now owned by EWTN. It has many orthodox contributors and is not at all liberal.

Okay. Thank you both for your replies.
I don’t know how to remember! I read something the other day that was from the Reporter and I wasn’t sure if I should h
just ignore it! Since both start witth “R” it makes it confusing. I definitely want the Register to be the one I pay attention to then.

Go to Fr. Z’s blog and search for ‘fishwrap’ to get an idea of what the Reporter is all about. 🙂

Between the two I would suggest the National Catholic Register. I read The Wanderer and like that one very much.

There used to be one good columnist at NCReporter, but John Allen got snatched up by the Boston Globe earlier this year.

And then there were none. 😛

If you have trouble remembering which is which, just remember the nickname the Reporter seems to have on here: “The National Catholic Distorter”. I saw someone refer to it as that a while back and I’ve never forgotten which is which since. :rotfl:

I too get them mixed up and have to stop and think about it.

The way I remember is the name Reporter => Makes me think of a news reporter - someone reporting just the news they want me to hear and not the whole truth.

I like the reporter/distorter rhyming connection.

So sad to hear that. (Well, good for the Globe) Like I said, I find it hard to go to the site at all due to the comments so I am (obviously) not up-to-date. :o

He was the only good thing about it.

When it comes to anything Vatican related, Allen is one of the best.

The National Catholic Reporter is very insightful and thought-provoking.

I actually use, read and enjoy both when it comes to getting news about the Church besides -]the BBC/-] secular media.

I’m a bit surprised that some of you are disapproving of the NCR. Having the two as news sources means either I’m a critical news reader or I have something else to counter the NCR.
