National Shrine Our Lady of Czestochowa

It’s near enough for us to visit.

I looked at the website, but can’t quite figure out what it’s all about. It’s a pilgrimage site, but what exactly does that mean? We can attend Mass there, but what else is there? Is there a museum, or…
 
I have never been there, but if you are close enough to visit I would take advantage of that!

It has a chapel that is meant to re-create the famous shrine in Poland. The shrine in Doylestown was founded to be a center of Polish culture and spirituality for Poles who live outside of Poland. There is not a museum as such that I noticed when I went there. There is a large cemetery. There is a retreat house, but it is not for individual retreats - only group retreats. Basically, you go there and pray.

It’s nice to walk around. They have several chapels, a wonderful giftshop, a St. John Paul II museum (which isn’t always open), Mass in English & Polish, adoration all day, confessions, etc.

I spent the entire afternoon there last Sept.
 
We go there often. There is a chapel that is a replica of Polish Czestochowa. Above that is the main church that has beautiful stained glass windows. It depicts several important events in church and American history. It has walking Stations of the Cross, a St. JPII museum, a replica Lourdes grotto, a gift shop, deli and cafeteria, Polish and English masses and confessions, and adoration. It has a candle chapel, and candle devotions to the Divine Mercy, St. Peregrine and St. Jude.

Their big Polish American festival is coming up on Labor Day weekend and the weekend after.

It is quite beautiful and definitely worth a visit!

The calendar of events show communal prayer and novenas, but many go to enjoy the grounds and the peacefulness of the place.

Sounds like you would not want to miss visiting the Shrine! I want to go now, but I am too far away!

Granted, we are Polish, but my parents always encouraged us to go (they went when we were living out of state) and my son absolutely loves it. You feel so at peace when you are there because the grounds as so beautiful. You feel the holiness of the place and the love of Mary, our mother, embracing you. We feel blessed to live only about 35 minutes away.

I can always send you a book on the Shrine next time we go. My son loves the reverence that the people show. He takes Mass very seriously…but he is also discerning a vocation, so I can understand why.

I believe you get a plenary indulgence for visiting Czestochowa. But we visit for the spiritual renewal it brings to us.

You are fortunate to live so close. if I lived that close I would probably visit once a month or so!!! 🙂

We do! We love going to confession by the Polish priests. But they give you a rather large penance…either the Divine Mercy chaplet or the Holy Rosary! They remind me of my uncle, also a priest.
 
In New Jersey, closer to my parents’ house and where I grew up, is the Blue Army Shrine…also dedicated to Mary. My uncle helped founded it. It is smaller but also very beautiful.
 
Every July there is a motorcycle pilgrimage from Chicago to the shrine.
