Wow! That is impressive! How did the Catholic population grow? People moving in?

How do they only have four priests for 35 000 people?! That’s far worse than the national US average.

Wow.

Reading the article made me proud. I hope Catholics throughout the country were as motivated as that flock.

I don’t know how I feel about a parish that large. A big part of me thinks the parish should be split into more than one parish (they have a second “campus” 10 miles away)

Sure, there are some advantages that come from being that big, but there also some negatives.

And how can a parish that big get away with only having regularly scheduled Confession from 4-5 on Saturdays and on Wednesdays from 6:30 PM til 7:15 PM?

God Bless!

That MIGHT be misleading

Some Southern and rural dioceses have what I’m going to call “floater priests”

These are priests (Religious or Diocesan) who are not assigned to any particular parish and they act as weekend assistants.

In my Archdiocese, parishes have a tendency to list Weekend Assistants on the bulletins and/or websites. But in some of these Southern and/or rural parishes don’t list them because the weekend assistant might frequently change.

I’m not saying that this large parish also has weekend assistants, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they did. But then again, they “only” have 8 Masses on Sunday. So if each priest had two Masses, they could cover without weekend assistants.

Oh wow… that seems pretty slim in terms of confessions. A local parish with 7 Sunday Masses, several thousand faithful and a mere 3 priests has at least a DOZEN posted confession times per week… (including before every Sunday Mass).

I live just south of the NC/SC state line. Our Parish is growing just as fast as St. Matthew. Mostly transplants. I remember growing up in SC in the 60’s and you could just about count the number of Catholics on both hands! (slight exaggeration). We now have close to 200,000 Catholics in a State of 4.6 million. Not huge numbers, but amazing if you had seen us in the 60’s.
