The most rational theory is lack of oxygen to the brain coupled with personal expectations.

A few years ago, I had a friend that was in bad shape, he had been in the hospital due to some problem in his intestines or something, dont know much about the details, but he died on the operating table for 7 minutes, He had a very scary NDE.

I should mention this guy was not religious at all, had never even been to church, he was married, but cheated often, he drank, drugged, and was involved in quite a few ‘scams’ trying to get quick money.

After his experience in the hospital, he eventually recovered and was released, and right after he got out, he was a changed person, I could tell just by talking to him that the NDE had really scared him, He changed his life.

After he was out for a couple days, I was visiting him at home and asked him to tell me about the NDE, he said he knew the exact moment he died on the operating table, had the image of seeing himself from above, he said very quickly he was in some kind of bar/ club, a band was setting up to play, and the lead singer was Satan, he claimed he had a very muscular, and built body (like a man), but had the head of an Opossum, he said the music was very strange and he had never heard this kind of music before, said it something almost not possible to even play, but after they played for awhile, Satan was trying to persuade my friend to go walk with him, my friend said this ‘being’ was very hard to turn down, but he did NOT accept.

I asked him how he knew it was Satan, maybe it was just some kind of bad dream or image he saw at some point in life, etc. He said he knew right away who this being was the very second he saw him, said he had NO doubt, he also said it was not like a dream at all, and he knew he was not alive at the time, this is strange to me, because my friend was not a religious person at all, and I had never heard him even mention God, Satan, religion, at ANYTIME, so I believed what he experienced was indeed real, he WAS clinically dead for 7 minutes, so I dont doubt he was with Satan.

I dont talk to him much anymore, but last time I saw him, he was still living a good life, staying faithful to his wife was a member at a church of Christ church, so I guess it worked out good for him.

I recommend you read the NDE of Gloria Polo.

Also watch this NDE of a priest that aired in EWTN on Mother Angelica’s program

Father Steven Scheier was condemned but was given a second chance.

I would say that there are equally negative as good NDEs as well as false ones.

I read so many NDEs that I started to suspect them all. Only a few I believe now actually. Others I think they are either the work of satan or a physiological explanation can be attributed to them. Many I believe the person truly believes he/she had an encounter with a being of light or Jesus, etc. however I find them hard to believe.

I would also advice to not believe every account. Just be ware and read at your own peril. The Church gives us the same advise. To read with caution.

Had a Heaven experience as a child, it never left me…most dreams we forget, this one never leaves me…

How long does it take until the Particular Judgement? Orthodox hold 40 days. They also say that during this time the soul see the Heavens and Hell.

Hello Ion.

You particular judgment happens when you are dead. You are found worthy of one of three things, Heaven, Hell or Purgatory. If you make regular use of the Confessional, Death won’t catch you off-guard. My personal spirituality has the door to the Confessional as the Gate of Heaven, for entering there one receives the healing help one needs straight from God Who can deliver you from all evils, including personal sins. But if you never go there, He cannot help you. Plus the Penances given do shorten you stay in Purgatory.

You mean that right away after the death comes the Particular Judgement? And right after the judgement the soul goes into the Heaven, Hell or Purgatory? Doesn’t the soul see them all before going into the placed decided for you?

There is nothing scriptural concerning “seeing” these places prior to going wherever.

Seeing requires eyes, anyway.

Maybe you are not really dead until you are judged?
That could be, given that none of these accounts describe facing a judgement.

It remains a true human mystery how these people see, with their human eyes closed, or rolled back, or in the dark or all three.

I expect they see the same way someone sees things in a dream.

Hello Schaeffer.

No, dreams aren’t reality and once dead you face the Ultimate Reality - God Himself in His fullness, only if you are worthy of Hell you won’t see Him at all and if you are worthy of Purgatory He’ll only seem as a far off Something towards which you yearn but cannot reach. No, dreams aren’t real so you can stop imaging that is how folks see after death.

Do you think that people who experience NDE’s are dead? Truly dead.

They are named NEAR death experiences. And they can be induced “artificially” through certain types of brain stimulation, and occasionally people experience them spontaneously when then are not in any danger of death at all.

Many people experience a life review, sometimes including angels or spirits with them evaluating their life, though that is not the same as being judged by God.

I had an NDE about 25 yrs ago, after the birth of my second child. I was dangerously hemmorhaging and losing a tremendous amount of blood but I was not dead. My situation was not as extreme as those of some people who are very very close to death when their experience occurs.

I read a lot about NDE’s and the variety is astounding.

Jesus is the only one who judges us.

yes, that is why I asked whether or not people believe that folks who experience NDE’s are REALLY dead, if no judgement by Christ takes place.

Too bad we never got a report of Lazarus experience. I’ve always wondered.

That’s an excellent point. In fact, I would extend it to other aspects of reported NDEs which appear to be inconsistent with scripture, or at least aren’t addressed in scripture.

And even disregarding the lack of a biblical basis for NDEs, there’s another very fundamental reason for disbelieving NDEs; namely, that “near-death” is not “death” - it is entirely different because death is final, absolute and irreversible, and since the afterlife by definition occurs after death, one cannot come back from it.

All very interesting opinions…thanks for sharing. I am neither condoning nor dismissing NDE’s and have read a lot on them, including books (some listed in this forum) and other peoples experiences. I found the information on this web site (link at bottom) pretty fascinating, although at times it seems to have an agenda, But the way the information is parsed out by relevance and similarity is great, plus all of the links to their stories…so I don’t necessarily agree with all of the “interpretations” the author has, I find the stories similar and fascinating…
