Near occasion to gripe

Hah! That pretty much sums up my role here on the forums. I ran into an acquaintance - we’ve hung out a few times in a group setting - and she asked me to get together for lunch sometime to talk about dating a non-Catholic. She asked ME b/c she sees me at church by myself w/ the kids. She’s actually divorced from a non-Catholic and believes that maybe the faith COULD have helped in their marriage, but no guarantee. Plus she has a 3yo. I told her I was flattered, but I didn’t think I had the best advice to give. Trying not to give her too much detail, I don’t consider my unequally yolked marriage a successful one. I know fellow parishoners who are married to non-Catholics who come to mass w/ them and participate in the choir and other groups without ever converting.

I mentioned the encounter to DH briefly and he just scoffed. I have a feeling that he’s thinking the same thing I am: this luncheon is just a near occasion of sin for me to go gripe about him, the way I do here. I’m praying I gave her enough of an idea and the HS leads her to someone better equipped to advise her.

I left from our little encounter in tears. When I told my GF about it and that I was unsure and maybe SHE had some advice, I left THERE in tears too. Last night on the way home from our family Thanksgiving, DH and I had a fleeting ‘moment’ where we both got a chuckle from one of the kids. It felt like the right moment to reach over and grab his hand and I got the cold shoulder. I was crushed, and I’m still reeling from it. I know I’m a lousy spouse and I’m going to have to do more than just try to hold his hand, but rejection is just devastating. I’m positive that he didn’t mean anything malicious by it, he’s just not an affectionate guy, but it still hurts.

The darkness is taking over me again and just having all of these sorrowful thoughts that DH and I really don’t even have a relationship. Maybe the whole unequally yolked thing could work if everything else wasn’t broken, if you were a real team. Just going through my laundry list of everything that’s wrong: he doesn’t eat with us, even when he ISN’T working late, doesn’t do anything with the kids, shows no interest in spending time together either as a couple or a family. My GF just recently complained to me that she was upset over SIL stealing ‘her’ time with DH b/c he was over at her new home helping unpack boxes. She doesn’t get my sympathy, I don’t get to ‘see’ my DH even when he’s home! I know, I know, someone’s going to come on here and blast me to bits and tell ME to quit feeling sorry for MYSELF b/c consider the widows and women whose DHs are off serving our country.

Nobody’s going to do that–at least the widows probably had their husbands previously and the Army wives probably have their husbands when they aren’t deployed. And obviously, a widow’s husband has a really good excuse for being away, as does a deployed soldier. Your situation seems more worth comparing to a single mom situation. I think you probably are much better off than your average single mom, if that’s any comfort at all.

Your list is pretty unusual. When did he stop eating with you? Is he depressed? I know you guys are busy–is there any hope that when things slow down, you can do marriage counseling of some kind?
